Translation note
The account says simply “Samuel” and tells what he said; it does not explain how it was possible. 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 says that Saul died for his unfaithfulness to YHWH and for having consulted a woman who called up the dead.
The context
13The king said to her, “Do not be afraid; for what do you see?” The woman said to Saul, “I see gods coming up from the earth.”
14 · This verse (above)
15Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing up me?” Saul said, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are fighting against me, and Elohim has turned away from me and no longer answers me, either by the hand of the prophets or by dreams; so I have called you to make known to me what I should do.”
