1 John 2:3–6
Knowing God shows in keeping his word and walking as Jesus walked
Study it word by word3And by this we know that we have come to know him: if we keep his commandments.
4Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God has been brought to completion. By this we know that we are in him:
6Whoever says he remains in him ought himself to walk just as he walked.
In its context
1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus the Messiah, the righteous one.
2And he is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
…
7Beloved, I am not writing to you a new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you heard.
8Yet I am writing to you a new commandment, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
