YHWHיְהוָהyehva

YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

wait, hope

Wait patiently; hope.

Where else “ochil” appears

Translation note

The Hebrew says only “and he said,” without naming who speaks. Later the text tells that the king himself had come down to Elisha (7:17).

The context

32Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And he sent a man from before him; before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold him back with the door. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
