Translation note
“They will not set their heart on us”: we will not matter to them. In “now there are ten thousand like us” the Hebrew is difficult; with one different letter it would say “you” instead of “now,” and then the sense would be “you are worth ten thousand of us.”
The context
2David sent out the people, a third under the command of Joab, a third under the command of Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will surely go out with you myself too.”
3 · This verse (above)
4The king said to them, “Whatever seems best in your eyes I will do.” So the king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
