Translation note

The Greek verb means “to cut off”; in this form, “to mutilate oneself,” “to have oneself castrated.” It can be understood as a play on circumcision: let them not stop at cutting off the foreskin.

The context

11But I, brothers, if I still proclaim circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.

12 · This verse (above)

13For you were called to freedom, brothers; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve as slaves to one another.
