And it happenedוַיְהִיin the seventh monthבַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִיthat Ishmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהsonבֶןof Elishamaאֱלִישָׁמָעcame,בָּאof the royalהַמְּלוּכָהoffspring,מִזֶּרַעand the great menוְרַבֵּיof the king,הַמֶּלֶךְand tenוַעֲשָׂרָהmenאֲנָשִׁיםwith him,אִתּוֹto Gedaliahאֶל גְּדַלְיָהוּsonבֶןof Ahikamאֲחִיקָםat Mizpah;הַמִּצְפָּתָהand they ateוַיֹּאכְלוּbreadלֶחֶםtogetherיַחְדָּוthereשָׁםat Mizpah.בַּמִּצְפָּה
Then Ishmaelוַ יִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהarose,יָּקָםand the tenוַעֲשֶׂרֶתmenהָאֲנָשִׁיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwereהָיוּwith him,אִתּוֹand they struckוַיַּכּוּGedaliahאֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּsonבֶןof Ahikamאֲחִיקָםsonבֶּןof Shaphanשָׁפָןwith the swordבַּחֶרֶבand putוַיָּמֶתhimאֹתוֹto death,יָּמֶתwhomאֲשֶׁרthe kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלhad appointedהִפְקִידin the land.בָּאָרֶץ
Also allוְאֵת כָּלthe Jewsהַיְּהוּדִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwereהָיוּwith him,אִתּוֹwith Gedaliah,אֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּat Mizpah,בַּמִּצְפָּהand the Chaldeansוְאֶת הַכַּשְׂדִּיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwere foundנִמְצְאוּthere,שָׁםthe menאֵת אַנְשֵׁיof war,הַמִּלְחָמָהIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלstruck down.הִכָּה
And it happened,וַיְהִיon the second dayבַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִיafter he had putלְהָמִיתGedaliahאֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּto death,הָמִיתand no oneוְאִישׁ לֹאknew it,יָדָע
that menוַ אֲנָשִׁיםcameיָּבֹאוּfrom Shechem,מִשְּׁכֶםfrom Shiloh,מִשִּׁלוֹand from Samaria,וּמִשֹּׁמְרוֹןeightyשְׁמֹנִיםmen,אִישׁwith their beards shavedמְגֻלְּחֵי זָקָןand their garments tornוּקְרֻעֵי בְגָדִיםand cutting themselves,וּמִתְגֹּדְדִיםwith a grain offeringוּמִנְחָהand frankincenseוּלְבוֹנָהin their handבְּיָדָםto bringלְהָבִיאto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
And Ishmaelוַ יִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהwent outיֵּצֵאto meet themלִקְרָאתָםfrom Mizpah,מִן הַמִּצְפָּהgoing alongהֹלֵךְ הָלֹךְand weeping;וּבֹכֶהand it happened,וַיְהִיwhen he metכִּפְגֹשׁthem,אֹתָםhe saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Comeבֹּאוּto Gedaliahאֶל גְּדַלְיָהוּsonבֶןof Ahikam.”אֲחִיקָם
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen they cameכְּבוֹאָםinto the midstאֶל תּוֹךְof the city,הָעִירthat Ishmaelוַ יִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהslaughtered themיִּשְׁחָטֵםand threw them intoאֶל תּוֹךְthe cistern,הַבּוֹרheהוּאand the menוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרwith him.אִתּוֹ
But tenוַעֲשָׂרָהmenאֲנָשִׁיםwere foundנִמְצְאוּamong themבָםwho saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto Ishmael,אֶל יִשְׁמָעֵאל“Do notאַלput us to death,תְּמִתֵנוּforכִּיwe haveיֶשׁ לָנוּhidden treasuresמַטְמֹנִיםin the field,בַּשָּׂדֶהwheatחִטִּיםand barleyוּשְׂעֹרִיםand oilוְשֶׁמֶןand honey.”וּדְבָשׁSo he refrained,וַיֶּחְדַּלand did notוְלֹאput them to deathהֱמִיתָםamongבְּתוֹךְtheir brothers.אֲחֵיהֶם
Now the cisternוְהַבּוֹרwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלhad thrownהִשְׁלִיךְallאֵת כָּלthe corpsesפִּגְרֵיof the menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwhomאֲשֶׁרhe had struck downהִכָּהalong withבְּיַדGedaliahגְּדַלְיָהוּwas the oneהוּאthatאֲשֶׁרKingהַמֶּלֶךְAsaאָסָאhad madeעָשָׂהbecause ofמִפְּנֵיBaashaבַּעְשָׁאkingמֶלֶךְof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלthat oneאֹתוֹIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהוּfilledמִלֵּאwith the slain.חֲלָלִים
Then Ishmaelוַ יִשְׁמָעֵאלtook captiveיִּשְׁבְּallאֶת כָּלthe remnantשְׁאֵרִיתof the peopleהָעָםwho wereאֲשֶׁרat Mizpah,בַּמִּצְפָּהthe daughtersאֶת בְּנוֹתof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְand allוְאֶת כָּלthe peopleהָעָםwho were leftהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםat Mizpah,בַּמִּצְפָּהwhomאֲשֶׁרNebuzaradanנְבוּזַרְאֲדָןthe chiefרַבof the guardטַבָּחִיםhad entrustedהִפְקִידto Gedaliahאֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Ahikam;אֲחִיקָםIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהtook them captiveוַיִּשְׁבֵּםand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto cross overלַעֲבֹרto the sonsאֶל בְּנֵיof Ammon.עַמּוֹן
And Johananוַ יוֹחָנָןsonבֶּןof Kareahקָרֵחַand allוְכָלthe chiefsשָׂרֵיof the forcesהַחֲיָלִיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרwith himאִתּוֹheardיִּשְׁמַעof allאֵת כָּלthe evilהָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהhad done,עָשָׂה
and they tookוַיִּקְחוּallאֶת כָּלthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםand wentוַיֵּלְכוּto fightלְהִלָּחֵםwith Ishmaelעִם יִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniah,נְתַנְיָהand they foundוַיִּמְצְאוּhimאֹתוֹbyאֶלthe greatרַבִּיםwatersמַיִםthatאֲשֶׁרare in Gibeon.בְּגִבְעוֹן
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhenכִּallכָּלthe peopleהָעָםwho wereאֲשֶׁרwith Ishmaelאֶת יִשְׁמָעֵאלsawרְאוֹתJohananאֶת יוֹחָנָןsonבֶּןof Kareahקָרֵחַand allוְאֵת כָּלthe chiefsשָׂרֵיof the forcesהַחֲיָלִיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרwith him,אִתּוֹthat they rejoiced.וַיִּשְׂמָחוּ
So allוַ כָּלthe peopleהָעָםwhomאֲשֶׁרIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלhad carried captiveשָׁבָהfrom Mizpahמִן הַמִּצְפָּהturned aroundיָּסֹבּוּand came backוַיָּשֻׁבוּand wentוַיֵּלְכוּto Johananאֶל יוֹחָנָןsonבֶּןof Kareah.קָרֵחַ
But Ishmaelוְיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהescapedנִמְלַטwith eightבִּשְׁמֹנָהmenאֲנָשִׁיםfromמִפְּנֵיJohanan,יוֹחָנָןand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto the sonsאֶל בְּנֵיof Ammon.עַמּוֹן
Then Johananוַ יוֹחָנָןsonבֶּןof Kareahקָרֵחַand allוְכָלthe chiefsשָׂרֵיof the forcesהַחֲיָלִיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרwith himאִתּוֹtookיִּקַּחallאֵת כָּלthe remnantשְׁאֵרִיתof the peopleהָעָםwhomאֲשֶׁרhe had brought backהֵשִׁיבfromמֵאֵתIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniah,נְתַנְיָהfrom Mizpah,מִן הַמִּצְפָּהafterאַחַרhe had struck downהִכָּהGedaliahאֶת גְּדַלְיָהsonבֶּןof Ahikam:אֲחִיקָםmen,גְּבָרִיםmenאַנְשֵׁיof war,הַמִּלְחָמָהand womenוְנָשִׁיםand little onesוְטַףand court officials,וְסָרִסִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרhe had brought backהֵשִׁיבfrom Gibeon.מִגִּבְעוֹן
And they wentוַיֵּלְכוּand stayedוַיֵּשְׁבוּat Geruth-chimham,בְּגֵרוּת כִּמְהָםwhich isאֲשֶׁרnearאֵצֶלBethlehem,בֵּית לָחֶםintending to goלָלֶכֶתand enterלָבוֹאEgypt,מִצְרָיִם
because ofמִפְּנֵיthe Chaldeans,הַכַּשְׂדִּיםforכִּיthey were afraidיָרְאוּof them,מִפְּנֵיהֶםbecauseכִּיIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלsonבֶּןof Nethaniahנְתַנְיָהhad struck downהִכָּהGedaliahאֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Ahikam,אֲחִיקָםwhomאֲשֶׁרthe kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלhad appointedהִפְקִידin the land.בָּאָרֶץ
