Translation note

Literally “what to me and to you?”, a Hebrew turn of phrase (Judges 11:12; 1 Kings 17:18); it can be understood as marking distance, not contempt. Jesus also calls his mother “woman” at the cross (19:26).

The context

3And when the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus says to him, “They have no wine.”

4 · This verse (above)

5His mother says to the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”
