Places in this verse
1Zion
Today: Mount Zion hill, Jerusalem
A hill in Jerusalem; it first named the fortress David captured, and later sometimes the whole city.
David captured the stronghold of Zion and called it the city of David (2 Sam 5:7). The Psalms and prophets call it the place where God lives among his people (Ps 48:2).
2Edom
Today: southern Jordan and the southern Negev
A mountain region south of the Dead Sea, in what is now southwest Jordan.
The Edomites came from Esau, Jacob's brother (Gen 36:1). Edom would not let Israel pass through its land (Num 20:14-21).
The context
21Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; to you also the cup will pass; you will become drunk and strip yourself bare.
