1 Samuel 1:10–18
Hannah, bitter in soul, prays silently, and Eli thinks she is drunk
Study it word by word10She was bitter of soul, and she prayed to YHWH and wept greatly.
11And she made a vow and said, “YHWH Tsevaot, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant and give your servant offspring of men, then I will give him to YHWH all the days of his life, and a razor shall not come up on his head.”
12And it happened, as she prayed at length before YHWH, that Eli was watching her mouth.
13Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips were moving, and her voice was not heard. So Eli took her to be drunk.
14And Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you.”
15And Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord; I am a woman troubled in spirit. Wine and intoxicating drink I have not drunk, but I have poured out my soul before YHWH.
16Do not regard your servant as a wicked woman, for out of the greatness of my complaint and my grief I have spoken until now.”
17Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and may the Elohim of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.”
18And she said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” So the woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.
In its context
8And Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9And Hannah rose after eating in Shiloh and after drinking. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of YHWH.
…
19They rose early in the morning and bowed down before YHWH; then they returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and YHWH remembered her.
20And it happened, at the turn of the days, that Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Samuel: “Because I asked for him from YHWH.”
