There wasוַיְהִיa certainאֶחָדmanאִישׁfromמִןRamathaim-zophimהָרָמָתַיִם צוֹפִיםof the hill countryמֵהַרof Ephraim,אֶפְרָיִםand his name wasוּשְׁמוֹElkanah,אֶלְקָנָהsonבֶּןof Jeroham,יְרֹחָםsonבֶּןof Elihu,אֱלִיהוּאsonבֶּןof Tohu,תֹּחוּsonבֶןof Zuph,צוּףan Ephraimite.אֶפְרָתִי
He hadוְלוֹtwoשְׁתֵּיwives;נָשִׁיםthe nameשֵׁםof the one wasאַחַתHannah,חַנָּהand the nameוְשֵׁםof the secondהַשֵּׁנִיתPeninnah.פְּנִנָּהAndוַPeninnahפְנִנָּהhadיְהִי לִchildren,יְלָדִיםbutוּHannahחַנָּהhadלְnoאֵיןchildren.יְלָדִים
Thatהַהוּאmanהָאִישׁused to go upוְעָלָהfrom his cityמֵעִירוֹyear after yearמִיָּמִים יָמִימָהto bow downלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺתand to sacrificeוְלִזְבֹּחַto YHWHלַיהוָהTsevaotצְבָאוֹתin Shiloh;בְּשִׁלֹהand thereוְשָׁםwerethe twoשְׁנֵיsonsבְנֵיof Eli,עֵלִיHophniחָפְנִיand Phinehas,וּפִנְחָסpriestsכֹּהֲנִיםof YHWH.לַיהוָה
And the day cameוַיְהִי הַיּוֹםwhen Elkanahאֶלְקָנָהsacrificed,וַיִּזְבַּחand he would giveוְנָתַןportionsמָנוֹתto Peninnahלִפְנִנָּהhis wifeאִשְׁתּוֹand to allוּלְכָלher sonsבָּנֶיהָand her daughters;וּבְנוֹתֶיהָ
but to Hannahוּלְחַנָּהhe would giveיִתֵּןaאַחַתdoubleאַפָּיִםportion,מָנָהforכִּיhe lovedאָהֵבHannah,אֶת חַנָּהthough YHWHוַיהוָהhad closedסָגַרher womb.רַחְמָהּ
And her rivalוְ צָרָתָהּwould provoke herכִעֲסַתָּהbitterlyגַּם כַּעַסin order toבַּעֲבוּרirritate her,הַרְּעִמָהּbecauseכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhad closed upסָגַר בְּעַדher womb.רַחְמָהּ
And soוְכֵןhe would doיַעֲשֶׂהyearשָׁנָהby year;בְשָׁנָהas often asמִדֵּיshe went upעֲלֹתָהּto the houseבְּבֵיתof YHWH,יְהוָהsoכֵּןshe would provoke her,תַּכְעִסֶנָּהand she would weepוַתִּבְכֶּהand notוְלֹאeat.תֹאכַל
And Elkanahוַ אֶלְקָנָהher husbandאִישָׁהּsaidיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“Hannah,חַנָּהwhyלָמֶהdo you weep?תִבְכִּיAnd whyוְלָמֶהdo you notלֹאeat?תֹאכְלִיAnd whyוְלָמֶהis your heartלְבָבֵךְsad?יֵרַעAmהֲIאָנֹכִיnotלוֹאbetterטוֹבto youלָךְthan tenמֵעֲשָׂרָהsons?”בָּנִים
And Hannahוַ חַנָּהroseתָּקָםafterאַחֲרֵיeatingאָכְלָהin Shilohבְשִׁלֹהand afterוְאַחֲרֵיdrinking.שָׁתֹהNow Eliוְעֵלִיthe priestהַכֹּהֵןwas sittingיֹשֵׁבonעַלthe seatהַכִּסֵּאbyעַלthe doorpostמְזוּזַתof the templeהֵיכַלof YHWH.יְהוָה
Sheוְהִיאwasbitterמָרַתof soul,נָפֶשׁand she prayedוַתִּתְפַּלֵּלtoעַלYHWHיְהוָהand wept greatly.וּבָכֹה תִבְכֶּה
And she madeוַתִּדֹּרa vowנֶדֶרand said,וַתֹּאמַר“YHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתifאִםyou will indeed lookרָאֹה תִרְאֶהon the afflictionבָּעֳנִיof your servantאֲמָתֶךָand remember meוּזְכַרְתַּנִיand notוְלֹאforgetתִשְׁכַּחyour servantאֶת אֲמָתֶךָand giveוְנָתַתָּהyour servantלַאֲמָתְךָoffspringזֶרַעof men,אֲנָשִׁיםthen I will give himוּנְתַתִּיוto YHWHלַיהוָהallכָּלthe daysיְמֵיof his life,חַיָּיוand a razorוּמוֹרָהshall notלֹאcome upיַעֲלֶהonעַלhis head.”רֹאשׁוֹ
And it happened,וְהָיָהasכִּיshe prayedלְהִתְפַּלֵּלat lengthהִרְבְּתָהbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהthat Eliוְעֵלִיwas watchingשֹׁמֵרher mouth.אֶת פִּיהָ
Hannahוְחַנָּהwas speakingהִיא מְדַבֶּרֶתinעַלher heart;לִבָּהּonlyרַקher lipsשְׂפָתֶיהָwere moving,נָּעוֹתand her voiceוְקוֹלָהּwas notלֹאheard.יִשָּׁמֵעַSo Eliוַ עֵלִיtook herיַּחְשְׁבֶהָto be drunk.לְשִׁכֹּרָה
And Eliוַ עֵלִיsaidיֹּאמֶרto her,אֵלֶיהָ“Howעַדlongמָתַיwill you be drunk?תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִיןPut awayהָסִירִי אֶתyour wineיֵינֵךְfrom you.”מֵעָלָיִךְ
And Hannahחַנָּהansweredוַתַּעַןand said,וַתֹּאמֶר“No,לֹאmy lord;אֲדֹנִיIאָנֹכִיama womanאִשָּׁהtroubledקְשַׁתin spirit.רוּחַWineוְיַיִןand intoxicating drinkוְשֵׁכָרI have notלֹאdrunk,שָׁתִיתִיbut I have poured outוָאֶשְׁפֹּךְmy soulאֶת נַפְשִׁיbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.יְהוָה
Do notאַלregardתִּתֵּןyour servantאֶת אֲמָתְךָasלִפְנֵיa wickedבְּלִיָּעַלwoman,בַּתforכִּיout of the greatnessמֵרֹבof my complaintשִׂיחִיand my griefוְכַעְסִיI have spokenדִּבַּרְתִּיuntilעַדnow.”הֵנָּה
Then Eliעֵלִיansweredוַיַּעַןand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Goלְכִיin peace,לְשָׁלוֹםand may the Elohimוֵאלֹהֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלgrantיִתֵּןyour petitionאֶת שֵׁלָתֵךְthatאֲשֶׁרyou have askedשָׁאַלְתְּof him.”מֵעִמּוֹ
And she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“May your servantשִׁפְחָתְךָfindתִּמְצָאfavorחֵןin your eyes.”בְּעֵינֶיךָSo the womanוַ הָאִשָּׁהwentתֵּלֶךְon her wayלְדַרְכָּהּand ate,וַתֹּאכַלand her faceוּפָנֶיהָwas no longerלֹא הָיוּ לָהּ עוֹדsad.
They rose earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּמוּin the morningבַבֹּקֶרand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH;יְהוָהthen they returnedוַיָּשֻׁבוּand cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלtheir houseבֵּיתָםat Ramah.הָרָמָתָהAnd Elkanahוַ אֶלְקָנָהknewיֵּדַעHannahאֶת חַנָּהhis wife,אִשְׁתּוֹand YHWHוַ יְהוָהremembered her.יִּזְכְּרֶהָ
And it happened,וַיְהִיat the turnלִתְקֻפוֹתof the days,הַיָּמִיםthat Hannahחַנָּהconceivedוַתַּהַרand gave birthוַתֵּלֶדto a son,בֵּןand she calledוַתִּקְרָאhis nameאֶת שְׁמוֹSamuel:שְׁמוּאֵל“BecauseכִּיI asked for himשְׁאִלְתִּיוfrom YHWH.”מֵיְהוָה
The manהָאִישׁElkanahאֶלְקָנָהwent upוַיַּעַלwith allוְכָלhis householdבֵּיתוֹto sacrificeלִזְבֹּחַto YHWHלַיהוָהthe yearlyהַיָּמִיםsacrificeאֶת זֶבַחand his vow.וְאֶת נִדְרוֹ
But Hannahוְחַנָּהdid notלֹאgo up,עָלָתָהforכִּיshe saidאָמְרָהto her husband,לְאִישָׁהּ“Untilעַדthe boyהַנַּעַרis weaned;יִגָּמֵלthen I will bring him,וַהֲבִאֹתִיוand he will appearוְנִרְאָהbeforeאֶת פְּנֵיYHWHיְהוָהand dwellוְיָשַׁבthereשָׁםforever.”עַד עוֹלָם
And Elkanahוַ אֶלְקָנָהher husbandאִישָׁהּsaidיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“Doעֲשִׂיwhat is goodהַטּוֹבin your eyes;בְּעֵינַיִךְstayשְׁבִיuntilעַדyou have weanedגָּמְלֵךְhim;אֹתוֹonlyאַךְmay YHWHיְהוָהestablishיָקֵםhis word.”אֶת דְּבָרוֹSo the womanהָאִשָּׁהstayedוַתֵּשֶׁבand nursedוַתֵּינֶקher sonאֶת בְּנָהּuntilעַדshe weanedגָּמְלָהּhim.אֹתוֹ
And she brought him upוַתַּעֲלֵהוּwith herעִמָּהּwhenכַּאֲשֶׁרshe had weaned him,גְּמָלַתּוּwith threeבְּ שְׁלֹשָׁהbulls,פָרִיםoneאַחַתephahוְאֵיפָהof flour,קֶמַחand a skinוְנֵבֶלof wine,יַיִןand she brought himוַתְּבִאֵהוּto the houseבֵיתof YHWHיְהוָהat Shiloh.שִׁלוֹAnd the boyוְהַנַּעַרwas young.נָעַר
And they slaughteredוַיִּשְׁחֲטוּthe bullאֶת הַפָּרand broughtוַיָּבִיאוּthe boyאֶת הַנַּעַרtoאֶלEli.עֵלִי
And she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“Pardon me,בִּיmy lord!אֲדֹנִיAs your soul lives,חֵי נַפְשְׁךָmy lord,אֲדֹנִיIאֲנִיamthe womanהָאִשָּׁהwho stoodהַנִּצֶּבֶתhereבָּזֶהwith youעִמְּכָהto prayלְהִתְפַּלֵּלtoאֶלYHWH.יְהוָה
ForאֶלthisהַזֶּהboyהַנַּעַרI prayed,הִתְפַּלָּלְתִּיand YHWHוַ יְהוָהhas givenיִּתֵּןmeלִיmy petitionאֶת שְׁאֵלָתִיthatאֲשֶׁרI askedשָׁאַלְתִּיof him.מֵעִמּוֹ
And Iוְ אָנֹכִיalsoגַםhave given him overהִשְׁאִלְתִּהוּto YHWH;לַיהוָהallכָּלthe daysהַיָּמִיםthatאֲשֶׁרhe livesהָיָה הוּאhe is given overשָׁאוּלto YHWH.”לַיהוָהAnd he bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחוּthereשָׁםto YHWH.לַיהוָה
