Acts 6:1–6

The neglected widows are cared for and seven are chosen for it

1Now in these days, as the disciples were increasing, there arose a complaint by the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution.

2So the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.

3So, brothers, select from among you seven men of good testimony, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint over this task;

4but we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.”

5And the matter pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch,

6whom they set before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
