Isaiah 1:11–17

God is fed up with sacrifices and asks them to learn to do good and defend the orphan

For what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me? says YHWH. I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and of the fat of fattened animals; and in the blood of bulls and of lambs and of male goats I do not delight.

When you come to appear before my face, who required this from your hand, the trampling of my courts?

Do not keep bringing a false offering; incense is an abomination to me; new moon and Sabbath, the calling of a convocation I cannot bear wickedness with a solemn assembly.

Your new moons and your appointed times my soul hates; they have become a load on me, I am weary of bearing them.

When you spread out your palms, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you multiply prayer, I am not listening; your hands are full of blood.

Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; stop doing evil.

Learn to do good; seek justice; set right the oppressor; judge the case of the orphan; plead the cause of the widow.

If you are willing and listen, you will eat the good of the land;
