Who wrote it

The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz (1:1). Jewish and Christian tradition attributes the whole book to him, and the New Testament quotes parts of the whole book under his name (John 12:38-41). Whether chapters 40–66 come from another hand is debated.

When it was written

Isaiah prophesied around 740–700 BC (1:1). Whether chapters 40–66 come from that time or from the exile, in the 6th century BC, is debated.

For whom, and in what situation

For Judah and Jerusalem under the threat of Assyria, in the days of Ahaz and Hezekiah (chapters 7; 36–37). From chapter 40 on it speaks to the exiles in Babylon and names Cyrus, king of Persia (44:28; 45:1).
