Job
Old Testament · translated from the Hebrew
A blameless man loses everything and does not understand why. His friends say he suffers for his sin; Job denies it and cries out to God. At the end YHWH answers him from the whirlwind, and Job, without all the answers, says, “Now my eye has seen you.”
How it is laid out
Key verses
Who wrote it
The book does not say who wrote it. The Babylonian Talmud (Baba Batra 14b–15a) attributes it to Moses. The authorship is debated.
When it was written
Debated: the book gives no dates and names no kings.
For whom, and in what situation
It names no audience. It speaks to anyone who suffers without understanding why. Job lives in the land of Uz (1:1), and the book does not mention Israel or Moses.
