Translation note

“My redeemer”: in Hebrew, goel. He was the close relative who had the duty to come to the defense of one of his own: to buy back his land, free him from slavery, or uphold his cause (Leviticus 25:25, 47-49; Ruth 4). The same title is given to God as the redeemer of his people (Isaiah 41:14; 44:6). Job affirms that his redeemer lives and that at the last he will rise on the dust; shortly before, he spoke of his “witness in the heavens” (16:19). “At the last”: it can also be understood as “the last one.”
