1The empty tomb
- His sign: as Jonah was in the sea monster, he will be three days and three nights in the earth
But he answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. For just as Jonah was in the belly of the sea monster three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
Matthew 12:39–40 - The women reach the tomb, and an angel tells them he is not here: he has risen
Now after the Sabbath, as it was dawning toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the grave. And look, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and was sitting on it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel answered the women, “Do not be afraid, you, for I know that you are seeking Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said. Come, see the place where he was lying. And go quickly and tell his disciples that ‘He has been raised from the dead, and look, he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Look, I have told you.” And going away quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell his disciples.
Matthew 28:1–8 - They go to anoint a body and find the stone moved and a message
And when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, they come to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they see that the stone had been rolled away; for it was very large. And entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were greatly alarmed. But he says to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are seeking Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Shorter ending: And all that they had been commanded they reported briefly to those around Peter. And after these things Jesus himself also sent out through them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.
Mark 16:1–8 - The women's report seems like nonsense to the apostles, but Peter runs to see
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices that they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. And it happened, while they were perplexed about this, that look, two men stood by them in flashing clothing. And as they became terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be handed over into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words. And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who were telling these things to the apostles. And these words seemed to them like nonsense, and they would not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; and stooping to look in, he sees the linen cloths alone; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.
Luke 24:1–12 - Peter and the other disciple run to the tomb and see the linen cloths; one “saw and believed”
Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene comes early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and she sees the stone taken away from the tomb. So she runs and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, whom Jesus held dear, and says to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out, and they were going to the tomb. And the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb. And stooping to look in, he sees the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. So Simon Peter also comes, following him, and he went into the tomb; and he sees the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth that had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up separately in one place. So then the other disciple, who had come first to the tomb, also went in, and he saw and believed; for they did not yet understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their homes.
John 20:1–10 - Mary weeps by the tomb until Jesus calls her by name
But Mary was standing outside at the tomb, weeping. So as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb; and she sees two angels in white, sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they say to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She says to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him.” Having said this, she turned around, and she sees Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus says to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She, thinking that he was the gardener, says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away.” Jesus says to her, “Mary!” Turning, she says to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus says to her, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father; but go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going up to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene comes and announces to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
John 20:11–18 - The guards are paid to say the disciples stole the body
While they were going, look, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the high priests all the things that had happened. And when they had gathered with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, “Say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were sleeping.’ And if this comes to the ears of the governor, we will persuade him and keep you out of trouble.” And they took the money and did as they had been instructed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.
Matthew 28:11–15
2They saw him alive
- Two travelers to Emmaus talk with Jesus without recognizing him
And look, two of them on that very day were going to a village sixty stadia away from Jerusalem, whose name was Emmaus; and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. And it happened, while they were talking and discussing, that Jesus himself drew near and was walking with them; but their eyes were held so as not to recognize him.
Luke 24:13–16 - They recognize him as he breaks the bread, and remember how their hearts burned
And it happened, when he reclined at table with them, that taking the bread, he blessed it, and breaking it, he began giving it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from them. And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us while he was speaking to us on the road, while he was opening to us the Scriptures?”
Luke 24:30–32 - Jesus eats fish in front of them to show he is not a spirit
And while they were saying these things, he himself stood in the middle of them. But startled and terrified, they thought they were seeing a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your heart? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Do you have anything to eat here?” And they gave him a piece of broiled fish; and he took it and ate it before them.
Luke 24:36–43 - He appears to the disciples locked in by fear and shows them his hands and side
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors where the disciples were had been locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle and says to them, “Peace to you.” And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
John 20:19–20 - Thomas sets conditions for believing, and Jesus offers them
But Thomas, one of the Twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.” And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, though the doors had been locked, and stood in the middle and said, “Peace to you.” Then he says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see my hands; and bring your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Happy are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
John 20:24–29 - From the shore he tells them where to cast the net, then gives them bread and fish
When it was already early morning, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. So Jesus says to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered him, “No.” And he said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and they were no longer able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. So that disciple whom Jesus loved says to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garment around himself, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off, dragging the net full of fish. So when they got out on the land, they see a charcoal fire in place and fish lying on it and bread. Jesus says to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have caught now.” So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus says to them, “Come, have breakfast.” But none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives it to them, and the fish likewise.
John 21:4–13 - Paul lists witnesses: Cephas, the Twelve, more than five hundred at once, James
and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve; then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, of whom most remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
1 Corinthians 15:5–8 - For forty days he showed himself alive and spoke to them about the kingdom of God
to them he also presented himself alive after his suffering by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:3
3Why it matters
- Paul sums up what he received: he died, was buried, and was raised, according to the Scriptures
For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that the Messiah died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he has been raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 - Paul: if the Messiah has not been raised, our faith is empty
and if the Messiah has not been raised, then our preaching is empty, and your faith is empty. And we are also found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that he raised the Messiah, whom he did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even the Messiah has been raised; and if the Messiah has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then also those who fell asleep in the Messiah perished. If we have hoped in the Messiah in this life only, we are more to be pitied than all people. But now the Messiah has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:14–20 - At Pentecost Peter declares that God raised him and death could not hold him
Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested by God to you by miracles and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know, this man, handed over by the determined plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed by nailing him to a cross by the hand of lawless men. Him God raised up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, ‘I saw the Lord before me always, for he is at my right hand, so that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; and moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the ways of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’ Brothers, it is permitted to speak to you with frankness about the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. So, being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one from the fruit of his loins on his throne, foreseeing this, he spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see decay. This Jesus God raised up, of which we all are witnesses.
Acts 2:22–32 - In Athens, Paul points to the resurrection as God's assurance that he will judge the world with justice
So God, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now commands all people everywhere to change their minds, because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the inhabited world in righteousness, by a man whom he has appointed, having given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to mock, but others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
Acts 17:30–32 - The resurrection designates him Son of God with power
concerning his Son, who came from the offspring of David according to the flesh, who was appointed Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead: Jesus the Messiah, our Lord,
Romans 1:3–4 - He was handed over for our faults and raised to declare us righteous
but also for the sake of us, to whom it will be counted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over for our trespasses and was raised for our declaration of righteousness.
Romans 4:24–25 - Raised, he dies no more; death no longer rules over him
knowing that the Messiah, having been raised from the dead, no longer dies; death no longer is master over him. For the death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God in the Messiah Jesus.
Romans 6:9–11 - Through his resurrection we have a living hope and an inheritance that does not fade
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus the Messiah from the dead, to an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
1 Peter 1:3–4
4We will rise too
- Job says his redeemer lives and that, after his skin is destroyed, he will see Eloah with his own eyes
And I know that my redeemer lives, and that at the last he will rise on the dust. And after this my skin has been destroyed, from my flesh I will see Eloah; whom I will see for myself, and my eyes will look on him, and not a stranger. My kidneys are consumed within my bosom.
Job 19:25–27 - Isaiah announces that the dead will live and those who sleep in the dust will wake
Your dead will live; my corpse, they will rise. Awake and shout for joy, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is a dew of lights, and the earth will cause to fall the shades.
Isaiah 26:19 - God says the bones are Israel: he will open their graves and put his spirit in them
And he said to me, “Son of man, these bones, they are the whole house of Israel. Look, they are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.’ Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says Adonai YHWH: Look, I am opening your graves, and I will bring you up from your graves, my people, and I will bring you to the ground of Israel. And you will know that I am YHWH, when I open your graves and when I bring you up from your graves, my people. And I will put my spirit in you, and you will live, and I will settle you on your own ground; and you will know that I, YHWH, have spoken and will do it, declares YHWH.’”
Ezekiel 37:11–14 - Daniel announces that many who sleep in the dust will wake
And many of those who sleep in the ground of dust will awake, these to eternal life, and those to reproaches, to eternal horror. And the insightful will shine like the brightness of the vault, and those who make the many righteous, like the stars forever and ever.
Daniel 12:2–3 - Jesus says the hour is coming when those in the tombs will hear his voice
Do not be amazed at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to a resurrection of life, and those who have practiced evil to a resurrection of judgment.
John 5:28–29 - He says it is his Father's will that he raise up on the last day all the Father gives him
And this is the will of the one who sent me: that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks at the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
John 6:39–40 - As death came through Adam, resurrection comes through the Messiah
For since through a man came death, also through a man has come the resurrection of the dead. For just as in Adam all die, so also in the Messiah all will be made alive. But each in his own order: the firstfruits, the Messiah; then those who belong to the Messiah at his coming;
1 Corinthians 15:21–23 - Sown in weakness, raised in power: the new body
So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in decay, it is raised in imperishability; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual one.
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 - Paul speaks of a mystery: we will be changed and death will be swallowed up
Look, I tell you a mystery: we will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. And when this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the word that is written will come about: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?
1 Corinthians 15:51–55 - So that they do not grieve without hope: God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep
But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, about those who are sleeping, so that you may not grieve as also the rest do who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so also God will bring with him, through Jesus, those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 - The Spirit who raised Jesus will also give life to our mortal bodies
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised the Messiah Jesus from the dead will give life also to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:11 - The one who raised Jesus will raise us too with him
knowing that the one who raised Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you.
2 Corinthians 4:14
