1Life is short
- The psalmist asks God to teach us to number our days
The days of our years —in them seventy years, and if by strength eighty years; and their pride is suffering and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away. Who knows the strength of your anger, and, according to the fear of you, your wrath? To number our days, so teach us, and we will bring a heart of wisdom.
Psalms 90:10–12 - David admits his life is as nothing before God: every human being is only a vapor
“Make me know, YHWH, my end and the measure of my days, what it is; let me know how fleeting I am. Look, as handbreadths you have made my days, and my lifetime is as nothing before you; only a vapor is every human being standing firm. Selah. Only as an image does a man walk about; only for vapor are they agitated; he heaps up and does not know who will gather it.
Psalms 39:4–6 - James says no one knows what tomorrow will bring
Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit, you who do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead of your saying, If the Lord wills, we will both live and do this or that.
James 4:13–15 - Job compares human life to a flower that withers and a shadow that flees
A human being born of woman is short of days and sated with turmoil. Like a flower he comes out and withers; he flees like the shadow and does not stand.
Job 14:1–2 - All flesh is grass, but the word of our Elohim stands forever
A voice says, “Call out.” And he said, “What shall I call out?” “All flesh is grass, and all its loyal love is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of YHWH blows on it; surely the people is grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our Elohim will stand forever.”
Isaiah 40:6–8 - God knows our frame and remembers that we are dust
For he knows our frame; he remembers that dust we are. A mortal, like grass are his days; like a flower of the field, so he flourishes; for a wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place no longer recognizes it.
Psalms 103:14–16 - The Preacher: remember your Creator in your youth, before the spirit returns to Elohim
And remember your Creator in the days of your young manhood, before the days of evil come and years arrive of which you will say, “I have no delight in them”; before the sun is darkened, and the light, and the moon and the stars, and the clouds return after the rain; on the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the men of vigor stoop, and those who grind cease because they are few, and those who look through the windows grow dark, and the doors on the street are shut, when the sound of the mill is low, and one rises at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low; also of what is high they are afraid, and terrors are in the way; and the almond tree blossoms, and the grasshopper grows heavy, and the caper fails, because the human being is going to his eternal house, and the mourners go around in the street; before the silver cord is snapped, and the golden bowl is crushed, and the jar is shattered at the spring, and the wheel is broken at the cistern; and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to Elohim who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 12:1–7
2Death entered the world
- God warns the man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or he will die

John 11:23–26 - The angel tells the women that Jesus has been raised
But the angel answered the women, “Do not be afraid, you, for I know that you are seeking Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said. Come, see the place where he was lying. And go quickly and tell his disciples that ‘He has been raised from the dead, and look, he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Look, I have told you.”

1 Corinthians 15:20 - Paul exults: “Where, O death, is your victory?”
And when this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the word that is written will come about: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? Now the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus the Messiah.
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 - Jesus shared flesh and blood to free those who feared death

5Dying with hope
- Paul says that for him to live is the Messiah and to die is gain
For to me to live is the Messiah, and to die is gain. But if I am to live in the flesh, this is fruit of work for me; and what I will choose I do not know. I am hard pressed between the two, having the desire to depart and to be with the Messiah, for that is far, far better; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
Philippians 1:21–24 - Paul contrasts the earthly tent with an eternal house, and would rather be at home with the Lord
For we know that if our earthly house of the tent is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. For indeed in this tent we groan, longing to put on our dwelling that is from heaven, if indeed, having put it on, we will not be found naked. For indeed we who are in the tent groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to put on the other over it, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. And the one who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who gave us the down payment of the Spirit. So, always being of good courage and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord —for we walk by faith, not by sight— and we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:1–8 - Paul writes so that they will not grieve like those who have no hope
But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, about those who are sleeping, so that you may not grieve as also the rest do who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so also God will bring with him, through Jesus, those who have fallen asleep. For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in the Messiah will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be always with the Lord. So comfort one another with these words.

But I am always with you; you have grasped my right hand. With your counsel you will guide me, and afterward with glory you will take me. Whom have I in the heavens? And with you I desire nothing on earth. My body and my heart are consumed; the rock of my heart and my portion is Elohim forever.
Psalms 73:23–26 - Near his departure, Paul says he has fought the good fight and kept the faith
For I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
