1He promised it

2No one knows the day

  • The disciples ask for the sign; Jesus begins by warning them not to be deceived

And as he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, “See to it that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and reports of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for it must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

    Matthew 24:3–8
  • Not even the angels or the Son know the day; it will be as in the days of Noah

But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, except the Father alone. For just as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah went into the ark, and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be also the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one is taken and one is left. Two women grinding at the mill; one is taken and one is left. So keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. Because of this you also must be ready, because at an hour you do not expect the Son of Man is coming.

    Matthew 24:36–44
  • Like the doorkeeper of a house, you must stay awake

But concerning that day or the hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Watch out, stay awake; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man away on a journey, who left his house and gave his slaves authority, to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. So keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or early in the morning; lest he come suddenly and find you sleeping. And what I say to you I say to all: keep watch.”

    Mark 13:32–37
  • The day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night, but you are not in darkness

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes just like a thief in the night. When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes upon them, like labor pains on a woman who is pregnant, and they will certainly not escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for the day to overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. So then, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us keep watch and be sober.

    1 Thessalonians 5:1–6
  • Peter foresees mockers asking where the promise of his coming is

knowing this first, that in the last days scoffers will come with scoffing, walking according to their own desires and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.

    2 Peter 3:3–4
  • For the Lord a thousand years are like a day; he is not slow, he is patient with you

But do not let this one thing escape you, beloved, that one day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about the promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to a change of mind. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements, burning, will be dissolved, and the earth and the works in it will be laid bare. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens, set on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements, burning, will melt? But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

    2 Peter 3:8–13

3Living ready

  • Belts fastened and lamps lit, like servants waiting for their master

Let your waists be girded and your lamps burning, and you be like people waiting for their master, to see when he will return from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks they may at once open to him. Happy are those slaves whom the master will find awake when he comes. Truly I tell you that he will gird himself and have them recline at table and will come and serve them. And if in the second watch or if in the third watch he comes and finds them so, happy are those slaves. But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also be ready, because at an hour you do not expect the Son of Man is coming.”

    Luke 12:35–40
  • The faithful servant does his work though the master is delayed; the wicked one takes advantage

Who, then, is the faithful and wise slave whom the master has put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? Happy is that slave whom his master will find doing so when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But if that wicked slave says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with the drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two and assign him his place with the hypocrites; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    Matthew 24:45–51
  • The talents: the master returns and asks for an account of what he left with each

Now after a long time the master of those slaves comes and settles accounts with them. And the one who had received the five talents came up and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; look, I have gained another five talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came up and said, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; look, I have gained another two talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one who had received the one talent also came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter; and being afraid, I went off and hid your talent in the ground; look, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘Wicked and lazy slave! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers, and when I came I would have received back what is mine with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

    Matthew 25:19–29
  • Don't let your hearts fill with excess and worries; stay awake and pray

But watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap; for it will come in on all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. But stay awake at every time, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

    Luke 21:34–36
  • James asks for patience like that of the farmer waiting for the rain

Be patient, then, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Look, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain. You also be patient; make firm your hearts, because the coming of the Lord has drawn near. Do not complain, brothers, against one another, so that you may not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the doors.

    James 5:7–9
  • While we wait for his appearing, grace teaches us to live with self-control and justice

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, training us that, having denied ungodliness and worldly desires, we may live sensibly and justly and godly in the present age, awaiting the happy hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus the Messiah, who gave himself for us so that he might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify for himself a people of his own, zealous for good works.

    Titus 2:11–14
  • John asks us to remain in him so we can meet him without shame when he appears

And now, little children, remain in him, so that when he is revealed we may have confidence and not shrink away in shame from him at his coming.

    1 John 2:28
  • When he appears we will be like him; that hope purifies

Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, because we will see him as he is. And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

    1 John 3:2–3
  • Paul asks that God keep them whole until his coming

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept whole, blameless, at the coming of our Lord Jesus the Messiah.

    1 Thessalonians 5:23

4What is to come

  • Jesus describes his appearing with the sound of a trumpet and his chosen gathered

And at once after the affliction of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a great trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

    Matthew 24:29–31
  • In the midst of anguish he says to lift up your heads, because your redemption is near

And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roar of the sea and the surging waves, people fainting from fear and expectation of the things coming on the inhabited world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

    Luke 21:25–28
  • Paul comforts grieving Thessalonians: we will always be with the Lord

For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in the Messiah will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be always with the Lord. So comfort one another with these words.

    1 Thessalonians 4:15–18
  • In the end he hands the kingdom to the Father, and God will be all in all

then the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, when he has done away with every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all the enemies under his feet. The last enemy is being done away with: death. For he subjected all things under his feet. But when he says all things have been subjected, it is clear that this is apart from the one who subjected all things to him. And when all things have been subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the one who subjected all things to him, so that God may be all in all.

    1 Corinthians 15:24–28
  • Every knee will bow to Jesus, to the glory of God the Father

Therefore God also highly exalted him and granted him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus the Messiah is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

    Philippians 2:9–11
  • Paul speaks of relief for the afflicted and God's justice when the Lord is revealed

if indeed it is righteous with God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted along with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power, in a flame of fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the good news of our Lord Jesus. They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, when he comes to be glorified in his saints and to be marveled at among all who have believed —because our testimony to you was believed— on that day.

    2 Thessalonians 1:6–10
  • John sees him on a white horse, called Faithful and True

And I saw heaven opened, and look, a white horse, and the one who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. And his eyes are a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, having a name written that no one knows except he himself. And he is clothed in a garment dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God. And the armies that are in heaven were following him on white horses, clothed in white, pure fine linen. And out of his mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it he may strike the nations; and he will shepherd them with an iron rod; and he treads the winepress of the wine of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. And on his garment and on his thigh he has a name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.

    Revelation 19:11–16
  • God will prepare a banquet for all peoples and wipe away the tears

And YHWH Tsevaot will make for all the peoples on this mountain a feast of rich foods, a feast of aged wines, of rich foods full of marrow, of aged wines well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the surface of the veil, the veil that is over all the peoples, and the covering that is spread over all the nations. He will swallow up death forever, and Adonai YHWH will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will remove from all the earth, for YHWH has spoken. And one will say on that day, “Look, this is our Elohim; we have waited for him, and he will save us. This is YHWH; we have waited for him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

    Isaiah 25:6–9
  • God promises to create new heavens and a new earth, and a Jerusalem of joy

For look, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be remembered, nor rise in the heart. But rather rejoice and exult forever in what I create; for look, I create Jerusalem as exultation, and her people as rejoicing. And I will exult in Jerusalem and rejoice in my people; and no longer will be heard in her the sound of weeping or the sound of crying.

    Isaiah 65:17–19
  • Peter: heaven must receive Jesus until the times of the restoration of all things

So change your minds and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and he may send the Messiah appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of the restoration of all things, of which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago.

  • The Bible ends with the Spirit and the bride saying “Come”

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life freely. I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written about in this book. The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
