1The King God promised

  • God installs his king on Zion and calls him his son

“But I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” I will recount the statute: YHWH said to me, “You are my son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will give nations as your inheritance, and as your possession the ends of the earth. You will break them with a rod of iron; like a vessel of a potter you will dash them to pieces.”

    Psalms 2:6–9
  • A psalm asks for a king who will do justice for the poor and bring peace

Of Solomon. Elohim, your judgments give to the king, and your righteousness to the son of the king. May he judge your people with righteousness, and your afflicted with justice. May the mountains bring peace to the people, and the hills, in righteousness. May he judge the afflicted of the people, save the sons of the needy, and crush the oppressor. They will fear you as long as there is sun, and before the moon, generation after generation. May he come down like rain on the mown field, like downpours that water the earth. May the righteous flourish in his days, and abundance of peace until there is no moon. And may he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

    Psalms 72:1–8
  • A shoot from Jesse will rule with justice, defending the humble

And a shoot will come out from the trunk of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. And the spirit of YHWH will rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of YHWH. And his delight will be in the fear of YHWH; and he will not judge by what his eyes see, nor decide by what his ears hear; but he will judge the poor with righteousness, and decide with uprightness for the humble of the earth; and he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will put to death the wicked. And righteousness will be the belt of his loins, and faithfulness the belt of his hips.

    Isaiah 11:1–5
  • All nations will go up to God's mountain, and swords will be beaten into mattocks

And it will happen at the end of the days that the mountain of the house of YHWH will be established at the top of the mountains, and it will be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations will stream to it, and many peoples will go and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of YHWH, to the house of the Elohim of Jacob, and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For out of Zion will go forth instruction, and the word of YHWH from Jerusalem. And he will judge between the nations and decide for many peoples; and they will beat their swords into mattocks and their spears into pruning knives; nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore.

    Isaiah 2:2–4
  • God promises to keep his good word with a branch of righteousness for David

Look, days are coming, declares YHWH, when I will fulfill the good word that I have spoken to the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause to sprout for David a sprout of righteousness, and he will do justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely; and this is the name by which they will call her: ‘YHWH, our righteousness.’

    Jeremiah 33:14–16
  • Daniel announces a kingdom God will raise up that will never be destroyed

And in the days of those kings the Elah of the heavens will set up a kingdom that forever will not be destroyed, and its kingdom will not be left to another people; it will crush and bring to an end all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

    Daniel 2:44
  • The kingdom and dominion will be given to the people of the saints of Illaya

And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under all the heavens will be given to the people of the saints of Illaya; his kingdom is an eternal kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey him.’

    Daniel 7:27
  • Gabriel tells Mary her son will receive David's throne and reign forever

And look, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

    Luke 1:31–33

2The kingdom has come near

3What the kingdom is like: the parables

  • The sower sows, and the seed bears fruit according to the soil where it falls

And he told them many things in parables, saying, “Look, the sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on the rocky ground, where they did not have much soil; and at once they sprang up, because they did not have depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and because they did not have root, they withered. Other seeds fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them. And other seeds fell on the good soil and were producing fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. The one who has ears, let him hear.”

    Matthew 13:3–9
  • The kingdom grows like a seed, and the sower does not know how

And he was saying, “The kingdom of God is like this: as if a man should scatter the seed on the ground, and sleep and rise night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows tall, he does not know how. By itself the earth bears fruit, first the blade, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain permits, at once he sends in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

    Mark 4:26–29
  • As small as a mustard seed or a bit of leaven, yet it ends up large

He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field; it is smaller than all the seeds, but when it has grown, it is greater than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.” He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

    Matthew 13:31–33
  • Wheat and weeds grow together until the harvest

He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven has become like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed darnel among the wheat and went away. And when the plants sprouted and produced grain, then the darnel appeared also. And the slaves of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then where does it get darnel?’ And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ And the slaves say to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he says, ‘No, so that while gathering the darnel you do not uproot the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the darnel first and tie it in bundles to burn it, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

    Matthew 13:24–30
  • A hidden treasure and a pearl: worth giving up everything for

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid; and in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls; and finding one very valuable pearl, he went away and sold all that he had and bought it.

    Matthew 13:44–46
  • Those hired last are paid the same as the first; the owner does as he wishes with what is his

And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, they received a denarius each. And when the first came, they thought that they would receive more; and they also received the denarius each. And when they received it, they were grumbling against the master of the house, saying, ‘These last ones worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am not wronging you. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go. But I want to give to this last one as I gave also to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is mine? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

    Matthew 20:9–16
  • A king invites guests to his son's wedding banquet, and the hall fills with unexpected guests

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven has become like a man, a king, who made a wedding feast for his son. And he sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were not willing to come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Look, I have prepared my dinner, my bulls and the fattened animals have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast.”’ But they paid no attention and went off, one to his own field, another to his business; and the rest, seizing his slaves, treated them shamefully and killed them. The king was angered, and sending his troops, he destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he says to his slaves, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. So go to the places where the roads go out of the city, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding feast.’ And those slaves went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was filled with guests.

    Matthew 22:1–10
  • Ten young women wait for the bridegroom: the kingdom calls for staying alert

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who, taking their lamps, went out to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were foolish and five wise. For the foolish, taking their lamps, did not take oil with them; but the wise took oil in flasks with their lamps. And as the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and were sleeping. But in the middle of the night there was a shout: ‘Look, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No; otherwise there will certainly not be enough for us and for you; go instead to those who sell and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut. And later the other virgins also come, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ So keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
