1Come, follow me

  • Jesus calls fishermen, and they leave their nets

And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of people.” And at once they left the nets and followed him. And going on a little, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. And at once he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, they went away after him.

    Mark 1:16–20
  • Matthew, the tax collector, gets up from his table and follows him

And passing on from there, Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he says to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

    Matthew 9:9
  • Jesus finds Philip and says only, “Follow me”

The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he finds Philip and Jesus says to him, “Follow me.”

    John 1:43
  • Elijah throws his cloak over Elisha, who leaves the oxen and follows him

He went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing, twelve yoke of oxen were before him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed over to him and threw his cloak on him. He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss, please, my father and my mother, and I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go, go back, for what have I done to you?” He turned back from following him, and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed it; and with the equipment of the oxen he boiled the meat, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he got up and went after Elijah and ministered to him.

    1 Kings 19:19–21
  • The sheep hear Jesus' voice and follow him; no one will snatch them from his hand

My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, ever; and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

    John 10:27–28

2The cost

  • Following him means denying yourself and taking up your cross

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for the sake of me will find it. For what will it profit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?

    Matthew 16:24–26
  • Jesus says to sit down and count the cost, with a tower and a king as examples

Now large crowds were traveling with him; and turning, he said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and even his own life as well, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see whether he has enough for completion? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while he is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So then, every one of you who does not renounce all his own possessions cannot be my disciple.

    Luke 14:25–33
  • Three meetings with Jesus on the road; two ask to do something else first

And as they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” And he said to another, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” But he said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And another also said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first allow me to say goodbye to those at my home.” But Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to a plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

    Luke 9:57–62
  • A rich man hears “come, follow me” and goes away sad, for he had many possessions

And as he was going out on the way, a man ran up and knelt before him and was asking him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But he, dismayed at the word, went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

    Mark 10:17–22
  • Paul counts as loss everything he had, to know the Messiah

But whatever things were gains to me, these I have considered loss because of the Messiah. More than that, I also consider all things to be loss because of the surpassing value of the knowledge of the Messiah Jesus my Lord, because of whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and I consider them garbage, so that I may gain the Messiah

    Philippians 3:7–8
  • Many turn back; Peter answers, “To whom shall we go?”

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You do not want to go away too, do you?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life, and we have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

    John 6:66–69

3Remaining in him

  • Jesus is the vine; apart from him we can do nothing

Remain in me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him, he bears much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like the branch and withers; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

    John 15:4–8
  • Remaining in his word is what makes someone a true disciple

So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

    John 8:31–32
  • Walk in him, rooted and established in the faith

So as you received the Messiah Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted and being built up in him and being strengthened in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

    Colossians 2:6–7
  • Paul: it is no longer I who live, but the Messiah lives in me

For I, through the law, died to the law, so that I might live to God. With the Messiah I have been crucified; and it is no longer I who live, but the Messiah lives in me; and what I now live in the flesh, I live in the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.

    Galatians 2:19–20
  • Whoever delights in God's instruction is like a tree by the water

Happy is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but in the instruction of YHWH is his delight, and on his instruction he meditates by day and night. He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, that gives its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and all that he does prospers.

    Psalms 1:1–3
  • Whoever trusts in YHWH keeps bearing fruit even in a year of drought

Blessed is the man who trusts in YHWH, and YHWH is his trust. And he will be like a tree planted by the waters, and by the stream it sends out its roots; and it will not see when heat comes, and its leaf will be flourishing; and in the year of drought it will not be anxious, nor cease from bearing fruit.

    Jeremiah 17:7–8
  • Whoever keeps his words is loved by the Father and he comes to live with them

Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) says to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
