    Genesis 3:15
  • Abraham is promised offspring through whom all the nations of the earth will be blessed

The angel of YHWH called to Abraham a second time from the heavens and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares YHWH, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only one, that I will surely bless you and will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of the heavens and as the sand that is on the shore of the sea; and your offspring will possess the gate of its enemies. And through your offspring all the nations of the earth will bless themselves, because you listened to my voice.”

    Genesis 22:15–18
  • Moses announces a prophet like himself, whom the people are to listen to

A prophet from among you, from your brothers, like me, YHWH your Elohim will raise up for you; to him you shall listen, according to all that you asked of YHWH your Elohim at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again the voice of YHWH my Elohim, and this great fire let me not see anymore, so that I do not die.” And YHWH said to me, “They have spoken well in what they have spoken. A prophet I will raise up for them from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

    Deuteronomy 18:15–18
  • David is promised a son of his whose throne will be established forever

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come out from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will make firm the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he will be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will rebuke him with the rod of men and with the blows of human beings, but my loyal love will not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I took away from before you. And your house and your kingdom will be firm forever before you; your throne will be established forever.’”

    2 Samuel 7:12–16

    Isaiah 7:14
  • A child is born to govern, with names that speak of wonder, strength and peace

For every boot of the one tramping in tumult, and the cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us, and the dominion will be on his shoulder; and his name will be called Wonder of a Counselor, Valiant El, Perpetual Father, Prince of Peace.

    Isaiah 9:5–6

    Micah 5:2

2The Word made flesh

  • John begins before creation: the Word was with God and was God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

    John 1:1–5
  • The Word became flesh and lived among us, full of grace and truth

And the Word became flesh and pitched his tent among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and of truth.

    John 1:14
  • Paul calls him the image of the invisible God, through whom all things were created

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, because in him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and all things hold together in him. And he is the head of the body, the assembly. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he himself may come to be first in all things, because God was pleased for all the fullness to dwell in him,

    Colossians 1:15–19
  • In the form of God, he emptied himself, took the form of a slave, and was obedient to death on a cross

Think this way among yourselves, which was also in the Messiah Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider being equal to God something to be seized, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming to be in the likeness of human beings; and being found in appearance as a human being, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

    Philippians 2:5–8
  • God spoke through the prophets and, in these last days, through the Son, the exact imprint of his being

In many portions and in many ways God, having spoken long ago to the fathers by the prophets, at the end of these days has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also made the ages. He, being the radiance of his glory and the exact imprint of his being, and sustaining all things by the word of his power, having made purification for sins by himself, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

    Hebrews 1:1–3
  • An angel tells Joseph the child is from the Holy Spirit and will be named Jesus

Now the origin of Jesus the Messiah was like this: when his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, before they came together she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to expose her publicly, decided to send her away secretly. And as he was considering these things, look, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. And she will give birth to a son, and you will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” And all this has happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, when he says: “Look, the virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel,” which is, translated, “God with us.”

    Matthew 1:18–23
  • He is born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger; shepherds are told a Savior has been born

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be registered with Mary, who was engaged to him, being pregnant. And it happened while they were there that the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guest room. And there were shepherds in that same region, living out in the fields and keeping watch by night over their flock. And an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were afraid with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for look, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people; for today a Savior has been born to you who is the Messiah, the Lord, in the city of David.

    Luke 2:4–11

3Son of God and Son of Man

  • Daniel sees one like a son of man given dominion over all peoples

I was looking in the visions of the night, and look, with the clouds of the heavens one like a son of man was coming, and he came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him. And to him was given dominion and honor and kingdom, and all the peoples, nations, and languages will serve him; his dominion is an eternal dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom one that will not be destroyed.

    Daniel 7:13–14
  • Peter answers who Jesus is, and Jesus says where that answer came from

Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he was asking his disciples, saying, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Immerser, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He says to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Happy are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

    Matthew 16:13–17
  • Before the high priest, Jesus answers “I am” and speaks of the Son of Man

And the high priest stood up in the middle and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you not answer anything? What is it that these men are testifying against you?” But he was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest was questioning him and says to him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” And Jesus said, “I am; and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

    Mark 14:60–62
  • He says he and the Father are one; his hearers accuse him of making himself God

I and the Father are one.” The Jews again picked up stones to stone him. Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of these works are you stoning me?” The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are stoning you, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of the one whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

    John 10:30–36

4What he said about himself

Jesus says to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you know him and have seen him.” Philip says to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus says to him, “Have I been with you so long and you do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

    John 14:6–9

    John 11:25–26
  • He invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

    Matthew 11:28–30
  • He forgives a paralyzed man's sins, then heals him to show his authority

And Jesus, seeing their faith, says to the paralyzed man, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And at once Jesus, knowing in his spirit that they were reasoning like this within themselves, says to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your mat and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” —he says to the paralyzed man— “I say to you, get up, pick up your mat, and go to your home.” And he got up, and at once picking up the mat, he went out before all of them, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

    Mark 2:5–12

5What he did

  • In his hometown he reads Isaiah and says the good news for the poor is fulfilled today

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and according to his custom he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send away the oppressed in freedom, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” And rolling up the scroll and giving it back to the attendant, he sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

  • With a word he calms the storm, and the disciples are amazed

And when he got into a boat, his disciples followed him. And look, a great shaking arose on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but he was sleeping. And they came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us; we are perishing!” And he says to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men were amazed, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”

    Matthew 8:23–27
  • He gives sight to a man born blind and corrects a mistaken question about guilt

And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be revealed in him. We must carry out the works of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud from the saliva, and he spread the mud on his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went away and washed and came back seeing.

    John 9:1–7
  • He invites himself to the house of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector, and everything changes

And he entered and was passing through Jericho. And look, there was a man called by name Zacchaeus; and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he was trying to see who Jesus was, and he could not because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. And running ahead he climbed up into a sycamore-fig tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. And when he came to the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and welcomed him rejoicing. And when they saw it, all began grumbling, saying, “He has gone in to be the guest of a sinful man.” But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I give to the poor; and if I have extorted anything from anyone by false accusation, I pay back four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

    Luke 19:1–10
  • Accused of welcoming sinners, he answers with the parable of the lost sheep

Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near to him to hear him. And both the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable, saying, “What man among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes into the house, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who changes his mind than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of a change of mind.

    Luke 15:1–7
  • Knowing everything was in his hands, he takes a towel and washes his friends' feet

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, gets up from supper and lays aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, he tied it around himself. Then he pours water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.
