Matthew 1:18–23
An angel tells Joseph the child is from the Holy Spirit and will be named Jesus
Study it word by word18Now the origin of Jesus the Messiah was like this: when his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, before they came together she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to expose her publicly, decided to send her away secretly.
20And as he was considering these things, look, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21And she will give birth to a son, and you will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
22And all this has happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, when he says:
23“Look, the virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel,” which is, translated, “God with us.”
In its context
16And Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, the one called Messiah.
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
…
24And Joseph, rising from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took to himself his wife;
25and he did not know her until she had given birth to a son; and he called his name Jesus.
