Matthew 13:31–33

As small as a mustard seed or a bit of leaven, yet it ends up large

31He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field;

32it is smaller than all the seeds, but when it has grown, it is greater than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”

33He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

In its context

29But he says, ‘No, so that while gathering the darnel you do not uproot the wheat along with them.

30Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the darnel first and tie it in bundles to burn it, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

…

34All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he was telling them nothing,

35so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, when he says, “I will open my mouth in parables; I will pour out things hidden since the foundation of the world.”
