John 20:24–29
Thomas sets conditions for believing, and Jesus offers them
Study it word by word24But Thomas, one of the Twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, though the doors had been locked, and stood in the middle and said, “Peace to you.”
27Then he says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see my hands; and bring your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
28Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Happy are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
In its context
22And having said this, he breathed on them and says to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23If you forgive the sins of any, they have been forgiven them; if you retain those of any, they have been retained.”
…
30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples that are not written in this book;
31but these are written so that you may go on believing that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
