1What faith is

2Examples of faith

  • Abraham set out without knowing where he was going

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance; and he went out not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as a resident alien in the land of the promise as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was waiting for the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

    Hebrews 11:8–10
  • Abraham rises early to obey the hardest test

After these things Elohim tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take, please, your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will tell you.” Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and he rose and went to the place that Elohim had told him.

    Genesis 22:1–3
  • David faces the giant with God's name as his weapon

David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and with spear and with javelin; but I come to you in the name of YHWH Tsevaot, the Elohim of the battle lines of Israel, whom you have reproached. This day YHWH will hand you over into my hand, and I will strike you and remove your head from you; and I will give the corpses of the camp of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and to the animals of the earth, and all the earth will know that Israel has Elohim. And all this assembly will know that YHWH does not save with sword and with spear; for the war is YHWH’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

    1 Samuel 17:45–47
  • Three young men trust God, “and if not,” still

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “We have no need to answer you about this matter. If it is so, our Elah whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of fire blazing, and from your hand, O king, he will deliver us. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that your gods we do not serve, and to the image of gold that you set up we will not bow down.”

    Daniel 3:16–18
  • A centurion trusts Jesus' word and amazes him

When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, terribly tormented.” And he says to him, “I will come and heal him.” And the centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say a word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those who were following, “Truly I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

    Matthew 8:5–10
  • A sick woman touches Jesus' cloak and is healed

And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many doctors, and had spent all that she had, and had not been helped at all, but rather had grown worse, having heard about Jesus, came in the crowd from behind and touched his cloak; for she was saying, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And at once the source of her bleeding dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed of the affliction. And at once Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples were saying to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he was looking around to see the woman who had done this. But the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

    Mark 5:25–34
  • A Canaanite mother will not give up when Jesus is silent

And going out from there, Jesus withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. And look, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is badly demon-possessed.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and were urging him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” But he answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and was bowing down before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” But he answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” But she said, “Yes, Lord; for even the little dogs eat from the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

    Matthew 15:21–28

3Believing in Jesus

4Faith you can see in what you do

  • James: faith without deeds is dead

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? That faith cannot save him, can it? If a brother or a sister is naked and lacking daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and be filled, but you do not give them the things needed for the body, what good is it? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

    James 2:14–17
  • Abraham: his faith worked together with his deeds

Was not Abraham our father declared righteous by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working together with his works, and by the works faith was brought to completion, and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, And Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness; and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is declared righteous by works and not by faith alone.

    James 2:21–24
  • What counts is faith working through love

For in the Messiah Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is worth anything, but faith working through love.

    Galatians 5:6
  • Paul remembers the Thessalonians' work of faith

remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and endurance of hope in our Lord Jesus the Messiah,

    1 Thessalonians 1:3
  • James: show me your faith without deeds, and I will show mine by deeds

But someone will say: You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith apart from works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe, and shudder. But do you want to know, O empty man, that faith apart from works is barren?

    James 2:18–20

5When believing is hard

  • A father: “I believe; help my unbelief!”

And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for the one who believes.” At once the father of the child cried out and was saying, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

    Mark 9:23–24
  • Thomas wants to see before believing, and Jesus comes back for him

But Thomas, one of the Twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.” And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, though the doors had been locked, and stood in the middle and said, “Peace to you.” Then he says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see my hands; and bring your hand and put it into my side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Happy are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

    John 20:24–29
  • Peter walks on water and sinks when he sees the wind

And Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.” And he said, “Come.” And getting down from the boat, Peter walked on the waters and came to Jesus. But seeing the strong wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And at once Jesus, stretching out his hand, took hold of him and says to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

    Matthew 14:28–31
  • The apostles ask: “Add faith to us!”

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Add faith to us!” And the Lord said, “If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

    Luke 17:5–6
  • Though the harvest fails, the prophet rejoices in God

Though the fig tree does not blossom, and there is no yield on the vines, the work of the olive lies, and the fields do not produce food, the flock is cut off from the fold, and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will exult in YHWH; I will rejoice in the Elohim of my salvation. YHWH Adonai is my strength, and he makes my feet like those of the deer, and on my high places he makes me walk. For the director. With my stringed instruments.

    Habakkuk 3:17–19
  • Jesus invites us to have faith in God when we pray

And Jesus answers them, “Have faith in God. Truly I tell you that whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, everything that you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

    Mark 11:22–24
  • With a failing heart, the psalmist clings to God

Whom have I in the heavens? And with you I desire nothing on earth. My body and my heart are consumed; the rock of my heart and my portion is Elohim forever.

    Psalms 73:25–26
