1He Keeps His Promises

2His Covenant

  • After the flood, God makes a covenant with Noah and every living creature

And Elohim spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, “And I, look, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your offspring after you, and with every living being that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you, of all that came out of the ark, to every animal of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you: and never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And Elohim said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I am giving between me and you and every living being that is with you, for generations forever: my bow I have put in the cloud, and it will be for a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. And it will happen, when I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the cloud, that I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living being of all flesh; and the waters will never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow will be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the eternal covenant between Elohim and every living being of all flesh that is on the earth.” And Elohim said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

    Genesis 9:8–17
  • God establishes his covenant with Abram and changes his name

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, YHWH appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai; walk before me and be blameless. I will set my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.” Abram fell on his face, and Elohim spoke with him, saying, “As for me, look, my covenant is with you, and you will be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer will your name be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you fruitful exceedingly, and I will make you into nations, and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations as an eternal covenant, to be Elohim to you and to your offspring after you.

    Genesis 17:1–7
  • At Sinai, God recalls how he carried them "on eagles' wings"

‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. And now, if you will listen carefully to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special treasure out of all the peoples; for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

  • God promises David a house and a throne that will last forever

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come out from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will make firm the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he will be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will rebuke him with the rod of men and with the blows of human beings, but my loyal love will not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I took away from before you. And your house and your kingdom will be firm forever before you; your throne will be established forever.’”

    2 Samuel 7:12–16
  • Even if David's sons fail, God says he will not withdraw his steadfast love

Forever I will keep for him my loyal love, and my covenant will be firm for him. And I will set his offspring forever, and his throne like the days of the heavens. If his sons forsake my instruction and do not walk in my ordinances, if they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will call to account their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with blows. But my loyal love I will not withdraw from him, nor be false to my faithfulness. I will not profane my covenant, and what has gone out of my lips I will not change. Once I have sworn by my holiness: I will not lie to David. His offspring will be forever, and his throne like the sun before me; like the moon it will be established forever, and the witness in the cloud is faithful.” Selah.

    Psalms 89:28–37
  • Jeremiah announces a new covenant, written on the heart

Look, days are coming, declares YHWH, when I will make with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah a new covenant, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares YHWH. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares YHWH: I will put my instruction within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be to them Elohim, and they will be to me a people. And no longer will they teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know YHWH,’ for all of them will know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, declares YHWH; for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will not remember anymore.”

    Jeremiah 31:31–34

    Luke 22:19–20

3Faithful When We Are Not

  • Even in the land of their enemies, God says he will not break his covenant

Yet even for all this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them and I will not loathe them so as to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them; for I am YHWH their Elohim. But I will remember for them the covenant with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, to be their Elohim. I am YHWH.

    Leviticus 26:44–45
  • Israel confesses its stubbornness and recalls that God did not abandon them

But they and our fathers acted with arrogance and hardened their neck, and did not listen to your commandments. They refused to listen, and did not remember your wonders that you had done with them; and they hardened their neck and appointed a head to return to their servitude in their rebellion. But you are an Eloah of pardons, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in loyal love, and you did not abandon them. Even when they made for themselves a calf of cast metal and said, ‘This is your god who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and committed great acts of contempt, you, in your many mercies, did not abandon them in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud did not depart from over them by day, to lead them on the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they should go. And your good spirit you gave to give them understanding, and your manna you did not withhold from their mouth, and water you gave them for their thirst. Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing; their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell.

    Nehemiah 9:16–21

  • God compares his covenant with David to the fixed order of day and night

And the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah, saying, “Thus says YHWH: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their time, then also my covenant may be broken with David my servant, so that he will not have a son reigning on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, my ministers. As the army of the heavens cannot be counted, and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levites who minister to me.”

    Jeremiah 33:19–22
  • Paul asks whether human unfaithfulness cancels God's faithfulness

What then is the advantage of the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Much in every way. First of all, it is that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. What then? If some were unfaithful, their unfaithfulness will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? By no means! Rather, let God be true, and every human being a liar, as it is written: So that you may be declared righteous in your words and prevail when you are judged.

    Romans 3:1–4
  • Even if we are faithless, he remains faithful; he cannot deny himself

The word is trustworthy: For if we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

    2 Timothy 2:11–13
