In the third monthבַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁלִישִׁיafter the going outלְצֵאתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרָיִםon that dayבַּיּוֹם הַזֶּהthey cameבָּאוּto the wildernessמִדְבַּרof Sinai.סִינָי
They had set outוַיִּסְעוּfrom Rephidim,מֵרְפִידִיםand cameוַיָּבֹאוּto the wildernessמִדְבַּרof Sinai,סִינַיand they campedוַיַּחֲנוּin the wilderness;בַּמִּדְבָּרIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלcampedוַיִּחַןthereשָׁםin front ofנֶגֶדthe mountain.הָהָר
And Mosesוּמֹשֶׁהwent upעָלָהtoאֶלElohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand YHWHוַ יְהוָהcalledיִּקְרָאto himאֵלָיוfromמִןthe mountain,הָהָרsaying,לֵאמֹר“Thusכֹּהyou shall sayתֹאמַרto the houseלְבֵיתof Jacob,יַעֲקֹבand tellוְתַגֵּידthe sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵל
‘Youאַתֶּםhave seenרְאִיתֶםwhatאֲשֶׁרI didעָשִׂיתִיto the Egyptians,לְמִצְרָיִםand how I carriedוָאֶשָּׂאyouאֶתְכֶםonעַלeagles’נְשָׁרִיםwingsכַּנְפֵיand broughtוָאָבִאyouאֶתְכֶםto myself.אֵלָי
And now,וְעַתָּהifאִםyou will listen carefullyשָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּto my voiceבְּקֹלִיand keepוּשְׁמַרְתֶּםmy covenant,אֶת בְּרִיתִיyou shall beוִהְיִיתֶםmy special treasureלִי סְגֻלָּהout of allמִכָּלthe peoples;הָעַמִּיםforכִּיallכָּלthe earthהָאָרֶץis mine;לִי
and youוְאַתֶּםshall beתִּהְיוּto meלִיa kingdomמַמְלֶכֶתof priestsכֹּהֲנִיםand a holyוְ קָדוֹשׁnation.’גוֹיTheseאֵלֶּהare the wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרyou shall speakתְּדַבֵּרto the sonsאֶל בְּנֵיof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהcameיָּבֹאand calledוַיִּקְרָאthe eldersלְזִקְנֵיof the peopleהָעָםand setוַיָּשֶׂםbefore themלִפְנֵיהֶםallאֵת כָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהwordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commanded him.צִוָּהוּ
Allכָלthe peopleהָעָםansweredוַיַּעֲנוּtogetherיַחְדָּוand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“AllכֹּלthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas spokenדִּבֶּרwe will do.”נַעֲשֶׂהAnd Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהbrought backיָּשֶׁבthe wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof the peopleהָעָםto YHWH.אֶל יְהוָה
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Look,הִנֵּהIאָנֹכִיam comingבָּאto youאֵלֶיךָin a thickבְּעַבcloud,הֶעָנָןso thatבַּעֲבוּרthe peopleהָעָםmay hearיִשְׁמַעwhen I speakבְּדַבְּרִיwith you,עִמָּךְand may alsoוְגַםbelieveיַאֲמִינוּin youבְּךָforever.”לְעוֹלָםThen Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהtoldיַּגֵּדthe wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof the peopleהָעָםto YHWH.אֶל יְהוָה
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Goלֵךְtoאֶלthe peopleהָעָםand consecrate themוְקִדַּשְׁתָּםtodayהַיּוֹםand tomorrow,וּמָחָרand let them washוְכִבְּסוּtheir garmentsשִׂמְלֹתָם
and beוְהָיוּreadyנְכֹנִיםfor the third day;לַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁיforכִּיon the third dayבַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁיYHWHיְהוָהwill come downיֵרֵדin the sightלְעֵינֵיof allכָלthe peopleהָעָםuponעַלMountהַרSinai.סִינָי
You shall set limits forוְהִגְבַּלְתָּthe peopleאֶת הָעָםall around,סָבִיבsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Take careהִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶםnot to go upעֲלוֹתon the mountainבָּהָרorוּtouchנְגֹעַits edge.בְּקָצֵהוּWhoeverכָּל הַtouchesנֹּגֵעַthe mountainבָּהָרshall surelyמוֹתbe put to death.יוּמָת
Noלֹאhandיָדshall touchתִגַּעhim,בּוֹforכִּיhe shall surelyסָקוֹלbe stonedיִסָּקֵלorאוֹsurelyיָרֹהshot with arrows;יִיָּרֶהwhetherאִםanimalבְּהֵמָהorאִםman,אִישׁhe shall notלֹאlive.’יִחְיֶהWhenבִּthe ram’s hornהַיֹּבֵלsounds a long blast,מְשֹׁךְtheyהֵמָּהshall go upיַעֲלוּon the mountain.”בָהָר
Mosesמֹשֶׁהwent downוַיֵּרֶדfromמִןthe mountainהָהָרtoאֶלthe peopleהָעָםand consecratedוַיְקַדֵּשׁthe people,אֶת הָעָםand they washedוַיְכַבְּסוּtheir garments.שִׂמְלֹתָם
He saidוַיֹּאמֶרto the people,אֶל הָעָם“Beהֱיוּreadyנְכֹנִיםin threeלִשְׁלֹשֶׁתdays;יָמִיםdo notאַלgo nearתִּגְּשׁוּa woman.”אֶל אִשָּׁה
On the third day,וַיְהִי בַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁיwhenבִּהְיֹתmorning came,הַבֹּקֶרthere wereוַיְהִיthundersקֹלֹתand lightningsוּבְרָקִיםand a heavyוְ כָּבֵדcloudעָנָןonעַלthe mountain,הָהָרand the soundוְקֹלof a horn,שֹׁפָרveryמְאֹדloud;חָזָקand allוַ כָּלthe peopleהָעָםwhoאֲשֶׁרwere in the campבַּמַּחֲנֶהtrembled.יֶּחֱרַד
Mosesמֹשֶׁהbroughtוַיּוֹצֵאthe peopleאֶת הָעָםout ofמִןthe campהַמַּחֲנֶהto meetלִקְרַאתElohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand they took their standוַיִּתְיַצְּבוּat the footבְּתַחְתִּיתof the mountain.הָהָר
MountוְהַרSinaiסִינַיwas smoking,עָשַׁןall of it,כֻּלּוֹbecauseמִפְּנֵי אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad come downיָרַדupon itעָלָיוin fire;בָּאֵשׁand its smokeוַ עֲשָׁנוֹwent upיַּעַלlike the smokeכְּעֶשֶׁןof a furnace,הַכִּבְשָׁןand the wholeוַ כָּלmountainהָהָרtrembledיֶּחֱרַדviolently.מְאֹד
As the soundוַיְהִי קוֹלof the hornהַשּׁוֹפָרgrewהוֹלֵךְlouder and louder,וְחָזֵק מְאֹדMosesמֹשֶׁהwould speak,יְדַבֵּרand Elohimוְהָאֱלֹהִיםwould answer himיַעֲנֶנּוּwith a voice.בְקוֹל
YHWHיְהוָהcame downוַיֵּרֶדuponעַלMountהַרSinai,סִינַיtoאֶלthe topרֹאשׁof the mountain;הָהָרand YHWHוַ יְהוָהcalledיִּקְרָאMosesלְמֹשֶׁהtoאֶלthe topרֹאשׁof the mountain,הָהָרand Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהwent up.יַּעַל
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Go down,רֵדwarnהָעֵדthe people,בָּעָםlestפֶּןthey break throughיֶהֶרְסוּtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהto look,לִרְאוֹתand manyרָבof themמִמֶּנּוּfall.וְנָפַל
And alsoוְגַםthe priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםwho come nearהַנִּגָּשִׁיםto YHWHאֶל יְהוָהmust consecrate themselves,יִתְקַדָּשׁוּlestפֶּןYHWHיְהוָהbreak outיִפְרֹץagainst them.”בָּהֶם
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto YHWH,אֶל יְהוָה“The peopleהָעָםcannotלֹא יוּכַלcome upלַעֲלֹתtoאֶלMountהַרSinai,סִינָיforכִּיyouאַתָּהwarnedהַעֵדֹתָהus,בָּנוּsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Set limits aroundהַגְבֵּלthe mountainאֶת הָהָרand consecrate it.’ ”וְקִדַּשְׁתּוֹ
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Go,לֶךְgo down,רֵדand come up,וְעָלִיתָyouאַתָּהand Aaronוְאַהֲרֹןwith you;עִמָּךְbutוְthe priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםand the peopleוְהָעָםmust notאַלbreak throughיֶהֶרְסוּto come upלַעֲלֹתtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהlestפֶּןhe break outיִפְרָץagainst them.”בָּם
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהwent downיֵּרֶדtoאֶלthe peopleהָעָםand toldוַיֹּאמֶרthem.אֲלֵהֶם
