Joshua 21:43–45

On entering the land, it is said that not one word of what was promised failed

43So YHWH gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers; and they took possession of it and lived in it.

44And YHWH gave rest to them all around, according to all that he had sworn to their fathers; and not a man of all their enemies stood before them; all their enemies YHWH gave into their hand.

45Not a word fell of all the good word that YHWH had spoken to the house of Israel; everything came.

Its words in the original

  • יִּתֵּןyiten· give, put, set

Give, in a very wide sense: hand over, put, place, grant, allow, make something be.

  • יְהוָהyehva· YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

  • יִשְׂרָאֵלyisrael· Israel

Israel, the new name Jacob received from God, explained as "you have striven with God" (Genesis 32:28); then the name of the people that came from him and, after the division, of the northern kingdom.
