WhenוַיְהִיAbramאַבְרָםwasבֶּןninety-nineתִּשְׁעִים וְתֵשַׁעyears old,שָׁנָה שָׁנִיםYHWHיְהוָהappearedוַיֵּרָאto Abramאֶל אַבְרָםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Iאֲנִיam El Shaddai;אֵל שַׁדַּיwalkהִתְהַלֵּךְbefore meלְפָנַיandוֶbeהְיֵהblameless.תָמִים
I will setוְאֶתְּנָהmy covenantבְרִיתִיbetween meבֵּינִיand you,וּבֵינֶךָand I will multiplyוְאַרְבֶּהyouאוֹתְךָexceedingly.”בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד
Abramאַבְרָםfellוַיִּפֹּלon his face,עַל פָּנָיוand Elohimוַ אֱלֹהִיםspokeיְדַבֵּרwith him,אִתּוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר
“As for me,אֲנִיlook,הִנֵּהmy covenantבְרִיתִיis with you,אִתָּךְand you will beוְהָיִיתָthe fatherלְאַבof a multitudeהֲמוֹןof nations.גּוֹיִם
Noוְלֹאlongerעוֹדwill your nameאֶת שִׁמְךָbe calledיִקָּרֵאAbram,אַבְרָםbutוְyour nameשִׁמְךָwill beהָיָהAbraham,אַבְרָהָםforכִּיI have made youנְתַתִּיךָthe fatherאַבof a multitudeהֲמוֹןof nations.גּוֹיִם
I will make you fruitfulוְהִפְרֵתִי אֹתְךָexceedingly,בִּמְאֹד מְאֹדand I will make youוּנְתַתִּיךָinto nations,לְגוֹיִםand kingsוּמְלָכִיםwill comeיֵצֵאוּfrom you.מִמְּךָ
I will establishוַהֲקִמֹתִיmy covenantאֶת בְּרִיתִיbetween meבֵּינִיand youוּבֵינֶךָandוּבֵיןyour offspringזַרְעֲךָafter youאַחֲרֶיךָthroughout their generationsלְדֹרֹתָםas an eternalלִ עוֹלָםcovenant,בְרִיתto beלִהְיוֹתElohimלֵאלֹהִיםto youלְךָand to your offspringוּלְזַרְעֲךָafter you.אַחֲרֶיךָ
And I will giveוְנָתַתִּיto youלְךָand to your offspringוּלְזַרְעֲךָafter youאַחֲרֶיךָthe landאֵת אֶרֶץwhere you reside as an alien,מְגֻרֶיךָallאֵת כָּלthe landאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנַעַןas an eternalלַ עוֹלָםpossession;אֲחֻזַּתand I will beוְהָיִיתִיtheirלָהֶםElohim.”לֵאלֹהִים
Elohimאֱלֹהִיםsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Abraham,אֶל אַבְרָהָם“As for you,וְאַתָּהyou will keepתִשְׁמֹרmy covenant,אֶת בְּרִיתִיyouאַתָּהand your offspringוְזַרְעֲךָafter youאַחֲרֶיךָthroughout their generations.לְדֹרֹתָם
Thisזֹאתis my covenantבְּרִיתִיwhichאֲשֶׁרyou will keep,תִּשְׁמְרוּbetween meבֵּינִיand youוּבֵינֵיכֶםandוּבֵיןyour offspringזַרְעֲךָafter you:אַחֲרֶיךָeveryכָּלmaleזָכָרamong youלָכֶםshall be circumcised.הִמּוֹל
You shall be circumcisedוּנְמַלְתֶּםin the fleshאֵת בְּשַׂרof your foreskin,עָרְלַתְכֶםand it will beוְהָיָהa signלְאוֹתof the covenantבְּרִיתbetween meבֵּינִיand you.וּבֵינֵיכֶם
At the ageוּבֶןof eightשְׁמֹנַתdaysיָמִיםeveryכָּלmaleזָכָרamong youלָכֶםshall be circumcisedיִמּוֹלthroughout your generations,לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶםthe one bornיְלִידin the houseבָּיִתandוּthe one boughtמִקְנַתwith silverכֶּסֶףfromמִanyכֹּלforeignerבֶּן נֵכָרwhoאֲשֶׁרis notלֹא הוּאof your offspring.מִזַּרְעֲךָ
He must surely be circumcised,הִמּוֹל יִמּוֹלthe one bornיְלִידin your houseבֵּיתְךָand the one boughtוּמִקְנַתwith your silver;כַּסְפֶּךָandוְmy covenantבְרִיתִיwill beהָיְתָהin your fleshבִּבְשַׂרְכֶםas an eternalלִ עוֹלָםcovenant.בְרִית
Butוְan uncircumcisedעָרֵלmaleזָכָרwhoאֲשֶׁרis notלֹאcircumcisedיִמּוֹלin the fleshאֶת בְּשַׂרof his foreskin,עָרְלָתוֹthatהַהִואpersonהַנֶּפֶשׁshall be cut offוְנִכְרְתָהfrom his people;מֵעַמֶּיהָhe has brokenהֵפַרmy covenant.”אֶת בְּרִיתִי
Elohimאֱלֹהִיםsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Abraham,אֶל אַבְרָהָם“As for Saraiשָׂרַיyour wife,אִשְׁתְּךָyou shall not callלֹא תִקְרָאher nameאֶת שְׁמָהּSarai,שָׂרָיforכִּיSarahשָׂרָהwill be her name.שְׁמָהּ
I will blessוּבֵרַכְתִּיher,אֹתָהּand alsoוְגַםI will giveנָתַתִּיyouלְךָa sonבֵּןby her;מִמֶּנָּהI will bless her,וּבֵרַכְתִּיהָand she will becomeוְהָיְתָהnations;לְגוֹיִםkingsמַלְכֵיof peoplesעַמִּיםwill comeיִהְיוּfrom her.”מִמֶּנָּה
Abrahamאַבְרָהָםfellוַיִּפֹּלon his faceעַל פָּנָיוand laughed,וַיִּצְחָקand saidוַיֹּאמֶרin his heart,בְּלִבּוֹ“Will a son be bornהַ יִוָּלֵדto one who isלְּבֶןa hundredמֵאָהyears old?שָׁנָהAndוְאִםSarah,שָׂרָהwill she,הֲat ninetyבַת תִּשְׁעִיםyears,שָׁנָהgive birth?”תֵּלֵד
Abrahamאַבְרָהָםsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Elohim,אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים“If onlyלוּIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵאלmight liveיִחְיֶהbefore you!”לְפָנֶיךָ
Elohimאֱלֹהִיםsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“No, butאֲבָלSarahשָׂרָהyour wifeאִשְׁתְּךָwill bearיֹלֶדֶתyouלְךָa son,בֵּןand you shall callוְקָרָאתָhis nameאֶת שְׁמוֹIsaac;יִצְחָקand I will establishוַהֲקִמֹתִיmy covenantאֶת בְּרִיתִיwith himאִתּוֹas an eternalלִ עוֹלָםcovenantבְרִיתfor his offspringלְזַרְעוֹafter him.אַחֲרָיו
As for Ishmael,וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵאלI have heard you;שְׁמַעְתִּיךָlook,הִנֵּהI will blessבֵּרַכְתִּיhimאֹתוֹand make him fruitfulוְהִפְרֵיתִי אֹתוֹand multiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִיhimאֹתוֹexceedingly.בִּמְאֹד מְאֹדHe will fatherיוֹלִידtwelveשְׁנֵים עָשָׂרchiefs,נְשִׂיאִםand I will make himוּנְתַתִּיוinto a greatלְ גָּדוֹלnation.גוֹי
Butוְmy covenantאֶת בְּרִיתִיI will establishאָקִיםwith Isaac,אֶת יִצְחָקwhomאֲשֶׁרSarahשָׂרָהwill bearתֵּלֵדto youלְךָat thisהַזֶּהappointed timeלַמּוֹעֵדnextהָאַחֶרֶתyear.”בַּשָּׁנָה
When he finishedוַיְכַלspeakingלְדַבֵּרwith him,אִתּוֹElohimאֱלֹהִיםwent upוַיַּעַלfromמֵעַלAbraham.אַבְרָהָם
Then Abrahamוַ אַבְרָהָםtookיִּקַּחIshmaelאֶת יִשְׁמָעֵאלhis sonבְּנוֹand allוְאֵת כָּלthose bornיְלִידֵיin his houseבֵיתוֹand allוְאֵת כָּלthose boughtמִקְנַתwith his silver,כַּסְפּוֹeveryכָּלmaleזָכָרamong the menבְּאַנְשֵׁיof Abraham’sאַבְרָהָםhouse,בֵּיתand he circumcisedוַיָּמָלthe fleshאֶת בְּשַׂרof their foreskinעָרְלָתָםon thatהַזֶּהveryבְּעֶצֶםday,הַיּוֹםasכַּאֲשֶׁרElohimאֱלֹהִיםhad told him.דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ
Abrahamוְאַבְרָהָםwasבֶּןninety-nineתִּשְׁעִים וָתֵשַׁעyears oldשָׁנָהwhen he was circumcisedבְּהִמֹּלוֹin the fleshבְּשַׂרof his foreskin.עָרְלָתוֹ
And Ishmaelוְיִשְׁמָעֵאלhis sonבְּנוֹwasבֶּןthirteenשְׁלֹשׁ עֶשְׂרֵהyears oldשָׁנָהwhen he was circumcisedבְּהִמֹּלוֹin the fleshאֵת בְּשַׂרof his foreskin.עָרְלָתוֹ
On thatהַזֶּהveryבְּעֶצֶםdayהַיּוֹםAbrahamאַבְרָהָםwas circumcised,נִמּוֹלand Ishmaelוְיִשְׁמָעֵאלhis son;בְּנוֹ
and allוְכָלthe menאַנְשֵׁיof his house,בֵיתוֹthose bornיְלִידin the houseבָּיִתand those boughtוּמִקְנַתwith silverכֶּסֶףfromמֵאֵתa foreigner,בֶּן נֵכָרwere circumcisedנִמֹּלוּwith him.אִתּוֹ
