Now Sarai,וְשָׂרַיAbram’sאַבְרָםwife,אֵשֶׁתhad not borneלֹא יָלְדָהhim children;לוֹand she hadוְלָהּan Egyptianמִצְרִיתslave womanשִׁפְחָהwhose nameוּשְׁמָהּwas Hagar.הָגָר
Saraiשָׂרַיsaidוַתֹּאמֶרto Abram,אֶל אַבְרָם“Look,הִנֵּה נָאYHWHיְהוָהhas kept meעֲצָרַנִיfrom bearing children.מִלֶּדֶתGo inבֹּאpleaseנָאto my slave woman;אֶל שִׁפְחָתִיperhapsאוּלַיI will have childrenאִבָּנֶהthrough her.”מִמֶּנָּהAnd Abramוַ אַבְרָםlistenedיִּשְׁמַעto the voiceלְקוֹלof Sarai.שָׂרָי
So Sarai,וַ שָׂרַיAbram’sאַבְרָםwife,אֵשֶׁתtookתִּקַּחHagarאֶת הָגָרthe Egyptian,הַמִּצְרִיתher slave woman,שִׁפְחָתָהּat the endמִקֵּץof tenעֶשֶׂרyearsשָׁנִיםof Abram’sאַבְרָםlivingלְשֶׁבֶתin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנָעַןand gave herוַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּto Abramלְאַבְרָםher husbandאִישָׁהּasלוֹ לְa wife.אִשָּׁה
He went inוַיָּבֹאto Hagar,אֶל הָגָרand she conceived;וַתַּהַרand when she sawוַתֵּרֶאthatכִּיshe had conceived,הָרָתָהher mistressגְּבִרְתָּהּbecame of little accountוַתֵּקַלin her eyes.בְּעֵינֶיהָ
Then Saraiוַ שָׂרַיsaidתֹּאמֶרto Abram,אֶל אַבְרָם“The wrong done to meחֲמָסִיbe on you!עָלֶיךָIאָנֹכִיmyself gaveנָתַתִּיmy slave womanשִׁפְחָתִיinto your embrace,בְּחֵיקֶךָand when she sawוַתֵּרֶאthatכִּיshe had conceived,הָרָתָהI became of little accountוָאֵקַלin her eyes.בְּעֵינֶיהָMay YHWHיְהוָהjudgeיִשְׁפֹּטbetween meבֵּינִיand you.”וּבֵינֶיׄךָ
But Abramוַ אַבְרָםsaidיֹּאמֶרto Sarai,אֶל שָׂרַי“Look,הִנֵּהyour slave womanשִׁפְחָתֵךְis in your hand;בְּיָדֵךְdoעֲשִׂיto herלָהּwhat is goodהַטּוֹבin your eyes.”בְּעֵינָיִךְSo Saraiוַ שָׂרַיafflicted her,תְּעַנֶּהָand she fledוַתִּבְרַחfrom her presence.מִפָּנֶיהָ
The angelמַלְאַךְof YHWHיְהוָהfound herוַיִּמְצָאָהּby a springעַל עֵיןof waterהַמַּיִםin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרby the springעַל הָעַיִןon the wayבְּדֶרֶךְto Shur.שׁוּר
He said,וַיֹּאמַר“Hagar,הָגָרslave womanשִׁפְחַתof Sarai,שָׂרַיwhereאֵיfromמִזֶּהhave you come,בָאתand whereוְאָנָהare you going?”תֵלֵכִיShe said,וַתֹּאמֶר“From the presenceמִפְּנֵיof Saraiשָׂרַיmy mistressגְּבִרְתִּיIאָנֹכִיam fleeing.”בֹּרַחַת
The angelמַלְאַךְof YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“Returnשׁוּבִיto your mistress,אֶל גְּבִרְתֵּךְandוְsubmit yourselfהִתְעַנִּיunderתַּחַתher hand.”יָדֶיהָ
The angelמַלְאַךְof YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“I will greatlyהַרְבָּהmultiplyאַרְבֶּהyour offspring,אֶת זַרְעֵךְso thatוְit cannotלֹאbe countedיִסָּפֵרbecause of its multitude.”מֵרֹב
And the angelוַ מַלְאַךְof YHWHיְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“Look,הִנָּyouךְare pregnantהָרָהandוְwill bearיֹלַדְתְּa son,בֵּןand you will callוְקָרָאתhis nameשְׁמוֹIshmael,יִשְׁמָעֵאלforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas heardשָׁמַעyour affliction.אֶל עָנְיֵךְ
Heוְהוּאwill beיִהְיֶהa wild donkeyפֶּרֶאof a man;אָדָםhis handיָדוֹwill be against everyone,בַכֹּלand the handוְיַדof everyoneכֹּלagainst him;בּוֹandוְfacingעַל פְּנֵיallכָלhis brothersאֶחָיוhe will dwell.”יִשְׁכֹּן
So she calledוַתִּקְרָאthe nameשֵׁםof YHWH,יְהוָהwhoהַwas speakingדֹּבֵרto her,אֵלֶיהָ“Youאַתָּהare El Roi,”אֵל רֳאִיforכִּיshe said,אָמְרָה“Have I reallyהֲגַםseenרָאִיתִיhereהֲלֹםafterאַחֲרֵיthe one who sees me?”רֹאִי
That is whyעַל כֵּןthe wellלַבְּאֵרwas calledקָרָאBeer-lahai-roi;בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִיlook,הִנֵּהit is betweenבֵיןKadeshקָדֵשׁandוּבֵיןBered.בָּרֶד
HagarהָגָרboreוַתֵּלֶדAbramלְאַבְרָםa son,בֵּןand Abramוַ אַבְרָםcalledיִּקְרָאthe nameשֶׁםof his son,בְּנוֹwhomאֲשֶׁרHagarהָגָרbore,יָלְדָהIshmael.יִשְׁמָעֵאל
Abramוְאַבְרָםwasבֶּןeighty-sixשְׁמֹנִים וְשֵׁשׁyears oldשָׁנָה שָׁנִיםwhenבְּHagarהָגָרboreלֶדֶתIshmaelאֶת יִשְׁמָעֵאלto Abram.לְאַבְרָם
