John 20:11–18
Mary weeps by the tomb until Jesus calls her by name
Study it word by word11But Mary was standing outside at the tomb, weeping. So as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb;
12and she sees two angels in white, sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
13And they say to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She says to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him.”
14Having said this, she turned around, and she sees Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus.
15Jesus says to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She, thinking that he was the gardener, says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away.”
16Jesus says to her, “Mary!” Turning, she says to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher).
17Jesus says to her, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father; but go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going up to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.’”
18Mary Magdalene comes and announces to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
In its context
9for they did not yet understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
10So the disciples went away again to their homes.
…
19So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors where the disciples were had been locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle and says to them, “Peace to you.”
20And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
