When it was written

Around AD 95, at the end of Domitian's reign, according to Irenaeus (Against Heresies 5.30.3); this is debated, and others place it around AD 68–69.

For whom, and in what situation

The seven assemblies in Asia: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea (1:4, 11). John is their partner in the affliction and in endurance (1:9).
