Deuteronomy
Old Testament · translated from the Hebrew
Moses’ last speeches to Israel before they enter the land: he recalls what YHWH did, repeats and explains the law, and calls the people to love YHWH with all their heart and to choose life.
How it is laid out
Key verses
- Deuteronomy 6:4 — Hear, Israel: YHWH is one
- Deuteronomy 6:5 — You shall love YHWH your Elohim with all your heart
- Deuteronomy 30:19 — You shall choose life
- Deuteronomy 8:3 — Not by bread alone does a human being live
- Deuteronomy 31:6 — Be strong and firm: he will not let go of you or forsake you
Who wrote it
The book says that Moses spoke these words and wrote this instruction (1:1; 31:9, 24). Jewish and Christian tradition attributes the book to him; the account of his death (chapter 34) was written by another hand (Babylonian Talmud, Bava Batra 15a: Joshua). Authorship is debated.
When it was written
Debated. The speeches are set in the fortieth year after the exodus from Egypt (1:3), around the 15th or 13th century BC.
For whom, and in what situation
All Israel, in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan (1:1–5): the new generation that was about to enter the land without Moses.
