Hear,שְׁמַעIsrael:יִשְׂרָאֵלyouאַתָּהare crossingעֹבֵרtodayהַיּוֹםthe Jordanאֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןto go inלָבֹאto dispossessלָרֶשֶׁתnationsגּוֹיִםgreaterגְּדֹלִיםand mightierוַעֲצֻמִיםthan you,מִמֶּךָּcitiesעָרִיםgreatגְּדֹלֹתand fortifiedוּבְצֻרֹתup to the heavens,בַּשָּׁמָיִם
a peopleעַםgreatגָּדוֹלand tall,וָרָםthe sonsבְּנֵיof the Anakim,עֲנָקִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרyouאַתָּהknow,יָדַעְתָּand of whom youוְאַתָּהhave heard it said,שָׁמַעְתָּ“Whoמִיcan standיִתְיַצֵּבbeforeלִפְנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Anak?”עֲנָק
KnowוְיָדַעְתָּtodayהַיּוֹםthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָheהוּאis the one who crosses overהָעֹבֵרbefore youלְפָנֶיךָas a consumingאֹכְלָהfire;אֵשׁheהוּאwill destroy them,יַשְׁמִידֵםand heוְהוּאwill subdue themיַכְנִיעֵםbefore you;לְפָנֶיךָand you will dispossess themוְהוֹרַשְׁתָּםand make them perishוְהַאַבַדְתָּםquickly,מַהֵרasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas spokenדִּבֶּרto you.לָךְ
Do notאַלsayתֹּאמַרin your heart,בִּלְבָבְךָwhenבַּYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָpushesהֲדֹףthemאֹתָםout from before you,מִלְּפָנֶיךָsaying,לֵאמֹר“Because of my righteousnessבְּצִדְקָתִיYHWHיְהוָהhas brought me inהֱבִיאַנִיto take possession ofלָרֶשֶׁתthisהַזֹּאתland”;אֶת הָאָרֶץbutוּbecause of the wickednessבְרִשְׁעַתof theseהַ הָאֵלֶּהnationsגּוֹיִםYHWHיְהוָהis dispossessing themמוֹרִישָׁםfrom before you.מִפָּנֶיךָ
Notלֹאbecause of your righteousnessבְצִדְקָתְךָor because ofוּבְthe uprightnessיֹשֶׁרof your heartלְבָבְךָare youאַתָּהgoing inבָאto take possession ofלָרֶשֶׁתtheir land,אֶת אַרְצָםbutכִּיbecause of the wickednessבְּרִשְׁעַתof theseהַ הָאֵלֶּהnationsגּוֹיִםYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis dispossessing themמוֹרִישָׁםfrom before you,מִפָּנֶיךָand in order toוּלְמַעַןestablishהָקִיםthe wordאֶת הַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהsworeנִשְׁבַּעto your fathers,לַאֲבֹתֶיךָto Abraham,לְאַבְרָהָםto Isaac,לְיִצְחָקand to Jacob.וּלְיַעֲקֹב
Knowוְיָדַעְתָּthatכִּיit is notלֹאbecause of your righteousnessבְצִדְקָתְךָthat YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis givingנֹתֵןyouלְךָthisהַזֹּאתgoodהַטּוֹבָהlandאֶת הָאָרֶץto take possession of it,לְרִשְׁתָּהּforכִּיyouאָתָּהare a stubbornקְשֵׁה עֹרֶףpeople.עַם
Remember,זְכֹרdo notאַלforget,תִּשְׁכַּחhowאֵת אֲשֶׁרyou madeהִקְצַפְתָּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָangryהִקְצַפְתָּin the wilderness.בַּמִּדְבָּרFromלְמִןthe dayהַיּוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרyou came outיָצָאתָof the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרַיִםuntilעַדyou cameבֹּאֲכֶםtoעַדthisהַזֶּהplace,הַמָּקוֹםyou have beenהֱיִיתֶםrebelliousמַמְרִיםagainst YHWH.עִם יְהוָה
At Horebוּבְחֹרֵבyou madeהִקְצַפְתֶּםYHWHאֶת יְהוָהangry,הִקְצַפְתֶּםand YHWHוַ יְהוָהwas incensedיִּתְאַנַּףwith youבָּכֶםto the point of destroyingלְהַשְׁמִידyou.אֶתְכֶם
When I went upבַּעֲלֹתִיthe mountainהָהָרָהto receiveלָקַחַתthe tabletsלוּחֹתof stone,הָאֲבָנִיםthe tabletsלוּחֹתof the covenantהַבְּרִיתthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהmadeכָּרַתwith you,עִמָּכֶםI stayedוָאֵשֵׁבon the mountainבָּהָרfortyאַרְבָּעִיםdaysיוֹםand fortyוְאַרְבָּעִיםnights;לַיְלָהbreadלֶחֶםI did notלֹאeat,אָכַלְתִּיand waterוּמַיִםI did notלֹאdrink.שָׁתִיתִי
YHWHיְהוָהgaveוַיִּתֵּןmeאֵלַיthe twoאֶת שְׁנֵיtabletsלוּחֹתof stone,הָאֲבָנִיםwrittenכְּתֻבִיםwith the fingerבְּאֶצְבַּעof Elohim;אֱלֹהִיםand on themוַעֲלֵיהֶםwas written according to allכְּכָלthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad spokenדִּבֶּרwith youעִמָּכֶםon the mountainבָּהָרfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the fireהָאֵשׁon the dayבְּיוֹםof the assembly.הַקָּהָל
At the endוַיְהִי מִקֵּץof fortyאַרְבָּעִיםdaysיוֹםand fortyוְאַרְבָּעִיםnightsלָיְלָהYHWHיְהוָהgaveנָתַןmeאֵלַיthe twoאֶת שְׁנֵיtabletsלֻחֹתof stone,הָאֲבָנִיםthe tabletsלֻחוֹתof the covenant.הַבְּרִית
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto me,אֵלַי“Get up,קוּםgo downרֵדquicklyמַהֵרfrom here,מִזֶּהforכִּיyour peopleעַמְּךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou brought outהוֹצֵאתָof Egyptמִמִּצְרָיִםhave acted corruptly;שִׁחֵתthey have turned asideסָרוּquicklyמַהֵרfromמִןthe wayהַדֶּרֶךְthatאֲשֶׁרI commanded them;צִוִּיתִםthey have madeעָשׂוּfor themselvesלָהֶםa cast image.”מַסֵּכָה
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto me,אֵלַי“I have seenרָאִיתִיthisהַזֶּהpeople,אֶת הָעָםand look,וְהִנֵּהitהוּאis a stubbornקְשֵׁה עֹרֶףpeople.עַם
Let me alone,הֶרֶף מִמֶּנִּיthat I may destroy themוְאַשְׁמִידֵםand blot outוְאֶמְחֶהtheir nameאֶת שְׁמָםfrom underמִתַּחַתthe heavens;הַשָּׁמָיִםand I will makeוְאֶעֱשֶׂהyouאוֹתְךָinto a nationלְגוֹיmightierעָצוּםand more numerousוָרָבthan they.”מִמֶּנּוּ
So I turnedוָאֵפֶןand came downוָאֵרֵדfromמִןthe mountain,הָהָרwhile the mountainוְהָהָרwas burningבֹּעֵרwith fire,בָּאֵשׁand the twoוּשְׁנֵיtabletsלֻחֹתof the covenantהַבְּרִיתwere inעַלmy twoשְׁתֵּיhands.יָדָי
I looked,וָאֵרֶאand look,וְהִנֵּהyou had sinnedחֲטָאתֶםagainst YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֵיכֶםyou had madeעֲשִׂיתֶםfor yourselvesלָכֶםa castמַסֵּכָהcalf;עֵגֶלyou had turned asideסַרְתֶּםquicklyמַהֵרfromמִןthe wayהַדֶּרֶךְthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהyou.אֶתְכֶם
So I seizedוָאֶתְפֹּשׂthe twoבִּשְׁנֵיtabletsהַלֻּחֹתand threw themוָאַשְׁלִכֵםfromמֵעַלmy twoשְׁתֵּיhandsיָדָיand broke themוָאֲשַׁבְּרֵםbefore your eyes.לְעֵינֵיכֶם
Then I lay prostrateוָאֶתְנַפַּלbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהas at the first,כָּרִאשֹׁנָהfortyאַרְבָּעִיםdaysיוֹםand fortyוְאַרְבָּעִיםnights;לַיְלָהbreadלֶחֶםI did notלֹאeat,אָכַלְתִּיand waterוּמַיִםI did notלֹאdrink,שָׁתִיתִיbecause ofעַלallכָּלyour sinחַטַּאתְכֶםthatאֲשֶׁרyou had sinnedחֲטָאתֶםby doingלַעֲשׂוֹתwhat was evilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהprovoking him to anger.לְהַכְעִיסוֹ
ForכִּיI was afraidיָגֹרְתִּיofמִפְּנֵיthe angerהָאַףand the furyוְהַחֵמָהwith whichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהwas angryקָצַףwith you,עֲלֵיכֶםto destroyלְהַשְׁמִידyou.אֶתְכֶםBut YHWHוַ יְהוָהlistenedיִּשְׁמַעto meאֵלַיthatהַהִואtimeבַּפַּעַםalso.גַּם
And with AaronוּבְאַהֲרֹןYHWHיְהוָהwas greatlyמְאֹדincensed,הִתְאַנַּףto the point of destroyingלְהַשְׁמִידhim;וֹand I prayedוָאֶתְפַּלֵּלalsoגַּםforבְּעַדAaronאַהֲרֹןat that time.בָּעֵת הַהִוא
And your sinוְאֶת חַטַּאתְכֶםthatאֲשֶׁרyou had made,עֲשִׂיתֶםthe calf,אֶת הָעֵגֶלI tookלָקַחְתִּיand burnedוָאֶשְׂרֹףitאֹתוֹwith fireבָּאֵשׁand crushedוָאֶכֹּתit,אֹתוֹgrinding itטָחוֹןthoroughly,הֵיטֵבuntilעַד אֲשֶׁרit was fineדַּקas dust;לְעָפָרand I threwוָאַשְׁלִךְits dustאֶת עֲפָרוֹintoאֶלthe streamהַנַּחַלthat came downהַיֹּרֵדfromמִןthe mountain.הָהָר
Also at Taberah,וּבְתַבְעֵרָהat Massah,וּבְמַסָּהand at Kibroth-hattaavahוּבְקִבְרֹת הַתַּאֲוָהyou were makingהֱיִיתֶםYHWHאֶת יְהוָהangry.מַקְצִפִים
And when YHWHוּבִ יְהוָהsentשְׁלֹחַyouאֶתְכֶםfrom Kadesh-barnea,מִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַsaying,לֵאמֹר“Go upעֲלוּand take possession ofוּרְשׁוּthe landאֶת הָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI have givenנָתַתִּיyou,”לָכֶםyou rebelledוַתַּמְרוּagainst the commandאֶת פִּיof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֵיכֶםyou did notוְלֹאbelieveהֶאֱמַנְתֶּםhimלוֹorוְלֹאlistenשְׁמַעְתֶּםto his voice.בְּקֹלוֹ
You have beenהֱיִיתֶםrebelliousמַמְרִיםagainst YHWHעִם יְהוָהfrom the dayמִיּוֹםthat I knewדַּעְתִּיyou.אֶתְכֶם
So I lay prostrateוָאֶתְנַפַּלbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהthe fortyאֵת אַרְבָּעִיםdaysהַיּוֹםand the fortyוְאֶת אַרְבָּעִיםnightsהַלַּיְלָהthatאֲשֶׁרI lay prostrate,הִתְנַפָּלְתִּיbecauseכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhad saidאָמַרhe would destroyלְהַשְׁמִידyou.אֶתְכֶם
I prayedוָאֶתְפַּלֵּלtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהand said,וָאֹמַר“AdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH,יְהוִהdo notאַלdestroyתַּשְׁחֵתyour peopleעַמְּךָand your inheritance,וְנַחֲלָתְךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou ransomedפָּדִיתָby your greatness,בְּגָדְלֶךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou brought outהוֹצֵאתָof Egyptמִמִּצְרַיִםwith a strongחֲזָקָהhand.בְּיָד
Rememberזְכֹרyour servants,לַעֲבָדֶיךָAbraham,לְאַבְרָהָםIsaac,לְיִצְחָקand Jacob;וּלְיַעֲקֹבdo notאַלturnתֵּפֶןtoאֶלthe hardnessקְשִׁיof thisהָ הַזֶּהpeople,עָםor toוְאֶלits wickedness,רִשְׁעוֹor toוְאֶלits sin,חַטָּאתוֹ
lestפֶּןthe landהָאָרֶץfrom whichאֲשֶׁר מִשָּׁםyou brought usהוֹצֵאתָנוּsay,יֹאמְרוּ‘Because YHWH was not ableמִבְּלִי יְכֹלֶת יְהוָהto bring themלַהֲבִיאָםintoאֶלthe landהָאָרֶץof whichאֲשֶׁרhe had spokenדִּבֶּרto them,לָהֶםand because of his hatredוּמִשִּׂנְאָתוֹfor them,אוֹתָםhe brought them outהוֹצִיאָםto put them to deathלַהֲמִתָםin the wilderness.’בַּמִּדְבָּר
Yet theyוְהֵםare your peopleעַמְּךָand your inheritance,וְנַחֲלָתֶךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou brought outהוֹצֵאתָby your greatבְּ ךָ הַגָּדֹלpowerכֹחֲand by your outstretchedוּבִ ךָ הַנְּטוּיָהarm.”זְרֹעֲ
