At the endמִקֵּץof every sevenשֶׁבַעyearsשָׁנִיםyou shall makeתַּעֲשֶׂהa release.שְׁמִטָּה
And thisוְזֶהis the mannerדְּבַרof the release:הַשְּׁמִטָּהeveryכָּלcreditorבַּעַלshall releaseשָׁמוֹטthe loanמַשֵּׁהof his handיָדוֹthatאֲשֶׁרhe has lentיַשֶּׁהto his neighbor;בְּרֵעֵהוּhe shall notלֹאpressיִגֹּשׂhis neighborאֶת רֵעֵהוּor his brother,וְאֶת אָחִיוbecauseכִּיa releaseשְׁמִטָּהto YHWHלַיהוָהhas been proclaimed.קָרָא
The foreignerאֶת הַנָּכְרִיyou may press;תִּגֹּשׂbut whateverוַאֲשֶׁרof yoursלְךָisיִהְיֶהwith your brotherאֶת אָחִיךָyour handיָדֶךָshall release.תַּשְׁמֵט
However,אֶפֶס כִּיthere shall be noלֹא יִהְיֶהneedy oneאֶבְיוֹןamong you,בְּךָforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהwill surely blessבָרֵךְ יְבָרֶכְyouךָin the landבָּאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis givingנֹתֵןyouלְךָas an inheritanceנַחֲלָהto possessלְרִשְׁתָּit,הּ
if onlyרַק אִםyou truly obeyשָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמַעthe voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָbeing carefulלִשְׁמֹרto carry outלַעֲשׂוֹתallאֶת כָּלthisהַזֹּאתcommandmentהַמִּצְוָהthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam commanding youמְצַוְּךָtoday.הַיּוֹם
ForכִּיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָhas blessed you,בֵּרַכְךָasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe has spokenדִּבֶּרto you,לָךְand you will lendוְהַעֲבַטְתָּto manyרַבִּיםnations,גּוֹיִםbut youוְאַתָּהwill notלֹאborrow;תַעֲבֹטand you will ruleוּמָשַׁלְתָּover manyבְּ רַבִּיםnations,גוֹיִםbut over youוּבְךָthey will notלֹאrule.יִמְשֹׁלוּ
Ifכִּיthere isיִהְיֶהamong youבְךָa needy one,אֶבְיוֹןoneמֵאַחַדof your brothers,אַחֶיךָin oneבְּאַחַדof your gatesשְׁעָרֶיךָin your landבְּאַרְצְךָthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis givingנֹתֵןyou,לָךְyou shall notלֹאhardenתְאַמֵּץyour heartאֶת לְבָבְךָorוְcloseלֹא תִקְפֹּץyour handאֶת יָדְךָagainst your brother,מֵאָחִיךָthe needy one.הָאֶבְיוֹן
Butכִּיyou shall freely openפָתֹחַ תִּפְתַּחyour handאֶת יָדְךָto himלוֹand freely lendוְהַעֲבֵט תַּעֲבִיטֶhimנּוּenoughדֵּיfor his need,מַחְסֹרוֹwhateverאֲשֶׁרhe lacks.יֶחְסַר לוֹ
Guard yourselfהִשָּׁמֶר לְךָso that there is notפֶּן יִהְיֶהa wickedבְלִיַּעַלwordדָבָרinעִםyour heart,לְבָבְךָsaying,לֵאמֹר“The seventhהַשֶּׁבַעyear,שְׁנַתthe yearשְׁנַתof release,הַשְּׁמִטָּהis near,”קָרְבָהand your eyeוְ עֵינְךָis evilרָעָהtoward your brother,בְּאָחִיךָthe needy one,הָאֶבְיוֹןand you do notוְלֹאgiveתִתֵּןhim anything,לוֹand he cries outוְקָרָאagainst youעָלֶיךָto YHWH,אֶל יְהוָהand it becomesוְהָיָהsinחֵטְאin you.בְךָ
You shall freely giveנָתוֹן תִּתֵּןto him,לוֹand your heart shall notוְלֹא לְבָבְךָbe grievedיֵרַעwhen you giveבְּתִתְּךָto him,לוֹbecauseכִּיon accountבִּגְלַלof thisהַזֶּהthingהַדָּבָרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָwill bless youיְבָרֶכְךָin allבְּכָלyour workמַעֲשֶׂךָand in everyוּבְכֹלundertakingמִשְׁלַחof your hand.יָדֶךָ
Forכִּיthe needy one will neverלֹא אֶבְיוֹןceaseיֶחְדַּלfrom the midstמִקֶּרֶבof the land;הָאָרֶץthereforeעַל כֵּןIאָנֹכִיam commanding you,מְצַוְּךָsaying,לֵאמֹר“You shall freely openפָּתֹחַ תִּפְתַּחyour handאֶת יָדְךָto your brother,לְאָחִיךָto your poor,לַעֲנִיֶּךָand to your needyוּלְאֶבְיֹנְךָin your land.”בְּאַרְצֶךָ
Ifכִּיyour brother,אָחִיךָa Hebrew manהָעִבְרִיorאוֹa Hebrew woman,הָעִבְרִיָּהis soldיִמָּכֵרto youלְךָand serves youוַעֲבָדְךָsixשֵׁשׁyears,שָׁנִיםthen in theוּבַseventhהַשְּׁבִיעִתyearשָּׁנָהyou shall let him goתְּשַׁלְּחֶנּוּfreeחָפְשִׁיfrom you.מֵעִמָּךְ
And whenוְכִיyou let him goתְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּfreeחָפְשִׁיfrom you,מֵעִמָּךְyou shall notלֹאlet him goתְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּempty-handed.רֵיקָם
You shall provideהַעֲנֵיק תַּעֲנִיקfor himלוֹliberallyהַעֲנֵיקfrom your flock,מִצֹּאנְךָfrom your threshing floor,וּמִגָּרְנְךָand from your winepress;וּמִיִּקְבֶךָasאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָhas blessed you,בֵּרַכְךָyou shall giveתִּתֶּןto him.לוֹ
And you shall rememberוְזָכַרְתָּthatכִּיyou wereהָיִיתָa slaveעֶבֶדin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםand YHWHוַ יְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָredeemed you;יִּפְדְּךָthereforeעַל כֵּןIאָנֹכִיam commanding youמְצַוְּךָthisהַזֶּהthingאֶת הַדָּבָרtoday.הַיּוֹם
But ifוְהָיָה כִּיhe saysיֹאמַרto you,אֵלֶיךָ“I will notלֹאgo outאֵצֵאfrom you,”מֵעִמָּךְbecauseכִּיhe loves youאֲהֵבְךָand your household,וְאֶת בֵּיתֶךָbecauseכִּיit is goodטוֹבfor himלוֹwith you,עִמָּךְ
then you shall takeוְלָקַחְתָּthe awlאֶת הַמַּרְצֵעַand put itוְנָתַתָּהthrough his earבְאָזְנוֹinto the door,וּבַדֶּלֶתand he shall beוְהָיָהyourלְךָslaveעֶבֶדforever.עוֹלָםAnd alsoוְאַףto your female slaveלַאֲמָתְךָyou shall doתַּעֲשֶׂהthe same.כֵּן
It shall notלֹאseem hardיִקְשֶׁהin your eyesבְעֵינֶךָwhen you letבְּשַׁלֵּחֲךָhimאֹתוֹgo freeחָפְשִׁיfrom you,מֵעִמָּךְforכִּיtwiceמִשְׁנֶהthe wagesשְׂכַרof a hired workerשָׂכִירhe has served youעֲבָדְךָsixשֵׁשׁyears;שָׁנִיםand YHWHוּ יְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָwill bless youבֵרַכְךָin allבְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרyou do.תַּעֲשֶׂה
Everyכָּלfirstbornהַבְּכוֹרmaleהַזָּכָרthatאֲשֶׁרis bornיִוָּלֵדin your herdבִּבְקָרְךָand in your flockוּבְצֹאנְךָyou shall consecrateתַּקְדִּישׁto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֶיךָyou shall notלֹאworkתַעֲבֹדwith the firstbornבִּבְכֹרof your ox,שׁוֹרֶךָand you shall notוְלֹאshearתָגֹזthe firstbornבְּכוֹרof your flock.צֹאנֶךָ
BeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָyou shall eat itתֹאכֲלֶנּוּyearשָׁנָהby yearבְשָׁנָהin the placeבַּמָּקוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהchooses,יִבְחַרyouאַתָּהand your household.וּבֵיתֶךָ
But ifוְכִיit hasיִהְיֶה בוֹa defect,מוּםif it is lameפִּסֵּחַorאוֹblind,עִוֵּרanyכֹּלbadרָעdefect,מוּםyou shall notלֹאsacrifice itתִזְבָּחֶנּוּto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim.אֱלֹהֶיךָ
Within your gatesבִּשְׁעָרֶיךָyou may eat it;תֹּאכֲלֶנּוּthe uncleanהַטָּמֵאand the cleanוְהַטָּהוֹרalike,יַחְדָּוas they eat the gazelleכַּצְּבִיand the deer.וְכָאַיָּל
Onlyרַקits bloodאֶת דָּמוֹyou shall notלֹאeat;תֹאכֵלyou shall pour it outתִּשְׁפְּכֶנּוּonעַלthe earthהָאָרֶץlike water.כַּמָּיִם
