And now,וְעַתָּהIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלlistenשְׁמַעtoאֶלthe statutesהַחֻקִּיםand toוְאֶלthe rulesהַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam teachingמְלַמֵּדyouאֶתְכֶםto carry out,לַעֲשׂוֹתso thatלְמַעַןyou may liveתִּחְיוּand go inוּבָאתֶםand take possession ofוִירִשְׁתֶּםthe landאֶת הָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof your fathers,אֲבֹתֵיכֶםis givingנֹתֵןyou.לָכֶם
You shall notלֹאaddתֹסִפוּtoעַלthe wordהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam commandingמְצַוֶּהyou,אֶתְכֶםnorוְלֹאtake awayתִגְרְעוּfrom it,מִמֶּנּוּso as to keepלִשְׁמֹרthe commandmentsאֶת מִצְוֺתof YHWHיְהוָהyour ElohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam commandingמְצַוֶּהyou.אֶתְכֶם
Your eyesעֵינֵיכֶםare the ones that sawהָרֹאֹתwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהdidעָשָׂהat Baal-peor:בְּבַעַל פְּעוֹרforכִּיeveryכָלmanהָאִישׁwhoאֲשֶׁרwentהָלַךְafterאַחֲרֵיBaal-peor,בַעַל פְּעוֹרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָdestroyed himהִשְׁמִידוֹfrom your midst.מִקִּרְבֶּךָ
But youוְאַתֶּםwho clungהַדְּבֵקִיםto YHWHבַּיהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםare alive,חַיִּיםall of you,כֻּלְּכֶםtoday.הַיּוֹם
See,רְאֵהI have taughtלִמַּדְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםstatutesחֻקִּיםand rules,וּמִשְׁפָּטִיםasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהmy Elohimאֱלֹהָיcommanded me,צִוַּנִיso that you may doלַעֲשׂוֹתsoכֵּןin the midstבְּקֶרֶבof the landהָאָרֶץinto whichאֲשֶׁר שָׁמָּהyouאַתֶּםare goingבָּאִיםto take possession of it.לְרִשְׁתָּהּ
Keep themוּשְׁמַרְתֶּםand carry them out,וַעֲשִׂיתֶםforכִּיthatהִואis your wisdomחָכְמַתְכֶםand your understandingוּבִינַתְכֶםin the eyesלְעֵינֵיof the peoples,הָעַמִּיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwill hearיִשְׁמְעוּןallאֵת כָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהstatutesהַחֻקִּיםand say,וְאָמְרוּ“Surelyרַקthisהַזֶּהgreatהַגָּדוֹלnationהַגּוֹיis a wiseחָכָםand understandingוְנָבוֹןpeople.”עַם
Forכִּיwhatמִיgreatגָּדוֹלnationגוֹיis there thatאֲשֶׁרhasלוֹgodsאֱלֹהִיםso nearקְרֹבִיםto itאֵלָיוas YHWHכַּיהוָהour Elohim isאֱלֹהֵינוּwheneverבְּכָּלwe callקָרְאֵנוּon him?אֵלָיו
And whatוּמִיgreatגָּדוֹלnationגּוֹיis there thatאֲשֶׁרhasלוֹstatutesחֻקִּיםand rulesוּמִשְׁפָּטִיםso righteousצַדִּיקִםas allכְּכֹלthisהַזֹּאתinstructionהַתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam settingנֹתֵןbefore youלִפְנֵיכֶםtoday?הַיּוֹם
Onlyרַקguard yourselfהִשָּׁמֶר לְךָand keepוּשְׁמֹרyour soulנַפְשְׁךָcarefully,מְאֹדso that you do notפֶּןforgetתִּשְׁכַּח אֶתthe thingsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרyour eyesעֵינֶיךָhave seenרָאוּand so that they do notוּפֶןdepartיָסוּרוּfrom your heartמִלְּבָבְךָallכֹּלthe daysיְמֵיof your life.חַיֶּיךָMake them knownוְהוֹדַעְתָּםto your childrenלְבָנֶיךָand to the childrenוְלִבְנֵיof your children.בָנֶיךָ
The dayיוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרyou stoodעָמַדְתָּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָat Horeb,בְּחֹרֵבwhenבֶּYHWHיְהוָהsaidאֱמֹרto me,אֵלַי“Assembleהַקְהֶלthe peopleאֶת הָעָםfor me,לִיand I will make them hearוְאַשְׁמִעֵםmy words,אֶת דְּבָרָיwhichאֲשֶׁרthey will learnיִלְמְדוּןin order to fearלְיִרְאָהmeאֹתִיallכָּלthe daysהַיָּמִיםthatאֲשֶׁרtheyהֵםliveחַיִּיםonעַלthe ground,הָאֲדָמָהand they will teachיְלַמֵּדוּןtheir children.”וְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶם
You came nearוַתִּקְרְבוּןand stoodוַתַּעַמְדוּןat the foot ofתַּחַתthe mountain,הָהָרand the mountainוְהָהָרwas burningבֹּעֵרwith fireבָּאֵשׁtoעַדthe heartלֵבof the heavens:הַשָּׁמַיִםdarkness,חֹשֶׁךְcloud,עָנָןand thick cloud.וַעֲרָפֶל
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto youאֲלֵיכֶםfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the fire.הָאֵשׁYouאַתֶּםwere hearingשֹׁמְעִיםthe soundקוֹלof words,דְּבָרִיםbutוּyou sawרֹאִיםnoאֵינְכֶםform;תְמוּנָהonlyזוּלָתִיa voice.קוֹל
He declaredוַיַּגֵּדto youלָכֶםhis covenant,אֶת בְּרִיתוֹwhichאֲשֶׁרhe commandedצִוָּהyouאֶתְכֶםto carry out,לַעֲשׂוֹתthe tenעֲשֶׂרֶתwords,הַדְּבָרִיםand he wrote themוַיִּכְתְּבֵםonעַלtwoשְׁנֵיtabletsלֻחוֹתof stone.אֲבָנִים
And YHWHוְ יְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהmeאֹתִיat that timeבָּעֵת הַהִואto teachלְלַמֵּדyouאֶתְכֶםstatutesחֻקִּיםand rules,וּמִשְׁפָּטִיםfor you to carry them outלַעֲשֹׂתְכֶם אֹתָםin the landבָּאָרֶץinto whichאֲשֶׁר שָׁמָּהyouאַתֶּםare crossingעֹבְרִיםto take possession of it.לְרִשְׁתָּהּ
So guardוְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּםyour soulsלְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶםcarefully,מְאֹדforכִּיyou did notלֹאseeרְאִיתֶםanyכָּלformתְּמוּנָהon the dayבְּיוֹםthat YHWHיְהוָהspokeדִּבֶּרto youאֲלֵיכֶםat Horebבְּחֹרֵבfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the fire,הָאֵשׁ
so that you do notפֶּןact corruptlyתַּשְׁחִתוּןand makeוַעֲשִׂיתֶםfor yourselvesלָכֶםa carved imageפֶּסֶלin the formתְּמוּנַתof anyכָּלidol,סָמֶלthe representationתַּבְנִיתof maleזָכָרorאוֹfemale,נְקֵבָה
the representationתַּבְנִיתof anyכָּלbeastבְּהֵמָהthatאֲשֶׁרis on the earth,בָּאָרֶץthe representationתַּבְנִיתof anyכָּלwingedכָּנָףbirdצִפּוֹרthatאֲשֶׁרfliesתָּעוּףin the heavens,בַּשָּׁמָיִם
the representationתַּבְנִיתof anyכָּלcreeping thingרֹמֵשׂon the ground,בָּאֲדָמָהthe representationתַּבְנִיתof anyכָּלfishדָּגָהthatאֲשֶׁרis in the watersבַּמַּיִםbelowמִתַּחַתthe earth.לָאָרֶץ
And so that you do notוּפֶןlift upתִּשָּׂאyour eyesעֵינֶיךָto the heavensהַשָּׁמַיְמָהand seeוְרָאִיתָthe sun,אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁthe moon,וְאֶת הַיָּרֵחַand the stars,וְאֶת הַכּוֹכָבִיםallכֹּלthe armyצְבָאof the heavens,הַשָּׁמַיִםand be drawn awayוְנִדַּחְתָּand bow downוְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתָto themלָהֶםand serve them;וַעֲבַדְתָּםYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָhas allottedחָלַקthemאֲשֶׁר אֹתָםto allלְכֹלthe peoplesהָעַמִּיםunderתַּחַתallכָּלthe heavens.הַשָּׁמָיִם
But youוְאֶתְכֶםYHWHיְהוָהhas takenלָקַחand brought outוַיּוֹצִאyouאֶתְכֶםfrom the furnaceמִכּוּרof iron,הַבַּרְזֶלfrom Egypt,מִמִּצְרָיִםto beלִהְיוֹתa peopleלְעַםof inheritanceנַחֲלָהfor him,לוֹas you are thisכַּ הַזֶּהday.יּוֹם
YHWHוַיהוָהwas incensedהִתְאַנֶּףwith meבִּיbecause ofעַלyour words,דִּבְרֵיכֶםand he sworeוַיִּשָּׁבַעthat I would notלְבִלְתִּיcrossעָבְרִיthe Jordanאֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןand that I would notוּלְבִלְתִּיenterבֹאintoאֶלthe goodהַטּוֹבָהlandהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis givingנֹתֵןyouלְךָas an inheritance.נַחֲלָה
ForכִּיIאָנֹכִיam going to dieמֵתin thisבָּ הַזֹּאתland;אָרֶץI am notאֵינֶנִּיcrossingעֹבֵרthe Jordan.אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןBut youוְאַתֶּםare crossingעֹבְרִיםand will take possession ofוִירִשְׁתֶּםthisהַזֹּאתgoodהַטּוֹבָהland.אֶת הָאָרֶץ
Guard yourselves,הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶםso that you do notפֶּןforgetתִּשְׁכְּחוּthe covenantאֶת בְּרִיתof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםwhichאֲשֶׁרhe madeכָּרַתwith you,עִמָּכֶםand makeוַעֲשִׂיתֶםfor yourselvesלָכֶםa carved image,פֶּסֶלthe formתְּמוּנַתof anything,כֹּלcontrary to whatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָcommanded you.צִוְּךָ
ForכִּיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָisהוּאa consumingאֹכְלָהfire,אֵשׁa jealousקַנָּאEl.אֵל
Whenכִּיyou fatherתוֹלִידchildrenבָּנִיםand children’sוּבְנֵיchildren,בָנִיםand you have grown oldוְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּםin the land,בָּאָרֶץand you act corruptlyוְהִשְׁחַתֶּםand makeוַעֲשִׂיתֶםa carved image,פֶּסֶלthe formתְּמוּנַתof anything,כֹּלand doוַעֲשִׂיתֶםwhat is evilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָprovoking him to anger,לְהַכְעִיסוֹ
I callהַעִידֹתִיthe heavensאֶת הַשָּׁמַיִםand the earthוְאֶת הָאָרֶץto witnessהַעִידֹתִיagainst youבָכֶםtodayהַיּוֹםthatכִּיyou will surely perishאָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּןquicklyמַהֵרfromמֵעַלthe landהָאָרֶץto whichאֲשֶׁר שָׁמָּהyouאַתֶּםare crossingעֹבְרִיםthe Jordanאֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןto take possession of it.לְרִשְׁתָּהּYou will notלֹאprolongתַאֲרִיכֻןyour daysיָמִיםon it,עָלֶיהָbutכִּיyou will surely be destroyed.הִשָּׁמֵד תִּשָּׁמֵדוּן
YHWHיְהוָהwill scatterוְהֵפִיץyouאֶתְכֶםamong the peoples,בָּעַמִּיםand you will be leftוְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּםfewמְתֵיin numberמִסְפָּרamong the nationsבַּגּוֹיִםto whichאֲשֶׁר שָׁמָּהYHWHיְהוָהwill leadיְנַהֵגyou.אֶתְכֶם
Thereשָׁםyou will serveוַעֲבַדְתֶּםgods,אֱלֹהִיםthe workמַעֲשֵׂהof the handsיְדֵיof human beings,אָדָםwoodעֵץand stone,וָאֶבֶןwhichאֲשֶׁרneitherלֹאseeיִרְאוּןnorוְלֹאhearיִשְׁמְעוּןnorוְלֹאeatיֹאכְלוּןnorוְלֹאsmell.יְרִיחֻן
But from thereוּ מִשָּׁםyou will seekבִקַּשְׁתֶּםYHWHאֶת יְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָand you will find him,וּמָצָאתָifכִּיyou search for himתִדְרְשֶׁנּוּwith allבְּכָלyour heartלְבָבְךָand with allוּבְכָלyour soul.נַפְשֶׁךָ
When you are in distressבַּצַּר לְךָand allכֹּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהthingsהַדְּבָרִיםhave found you,וּמְצָאוּךָin the days to come,בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִיםyou will returnוְשַׁבְתָּtoעַדYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָand listenוְשָׁמַעְתָּto his voice.בְּקֹלוֹ
Forכִּיa mercifulרַחוּםElאֵלis YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֶיךָhe will notלֹאfail youיַרְפְּךָor destroy youוְלֹא יַשְׁחִיתֶךָorוְלֹאforgetיִשְׁכַּחthe covenantאֶת בְּרִיתof your fathersאֲבֹתֶיךָthatאֲשֶׁרhe sworeנִשְׁבַּעto them.לָהֶם
Forכִּיaskשְׁאַלnowנָאabout the formerלְ רִאשֹׁנִיםdaysיָמִיםthatאֲשֶׁרwereהָיוּbefore you,לְפָנֶיךָsinceלְמִןthe dayהַיּוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרElohimאֱלֹהִיםcreatedבָּרָאhuman beingsאָדָםonעַלthe earth,הָאָרֶץand fromוּלְמִone endקְצֵהof the heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםtoוְעַדthe other endקְצֵהof the heavens:הַשָּׁמָיִםhas anythingהֲhappenedנִהְיָהlikeכַּthisהַזֶּהgreatהַגָּדוֹלthing,דָּבָרorאוֹhas anything been heardהֲנִשְׁמַעlike it?כָּמֹהוּ
Hasהֲa peopleעָםheardשָׁמַעthe voiceקוֹלof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםspeakingמְדַבֵּרfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the fire,הָאֵשׁasכַּאֲשֶׁרyouאַתָּהhave heard,שָׁמַעְתָּand lived?וַיֶּחִי
Orאוֹhasהֲa godאֱלֹהִיםtriedנִסָּהto comeלָבוֹאand takeלָקַחַתfor himselfלוֹa nationגוֹיfrom the midstמִקֶּרֶבof another nation,גּוֹיby trials,בְּמַסֹּתby signs,בְּאֹתֹתand by wonders,וּבְמוֹפְתִיםand by war,וּבְמִלְחָמָהand by a strongחֲזָקָהhandוּבְיָדand by an outstretchedנְטוּיָהarm,וּבִזְרוֹעַand by greatגְּדֹלִיםterrors,וּבְמוֹרָאִיםaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםdidעָשָׂהfor youלָכֶםin Egyptבְּמִצְרַיִםbefore your eyes?לְעֵינֶיךָ
To youאַתָּהit was shown,הָרְאֵתָso that you might knowלָדַעַתthatכִּיYHWH,יְהוָהheהוּאis Elohim;הָאֱלֹהִיםthere is noאֵיןotherעוֹדbesides him.מִלְבַדּוֹ
Fromמִןthe heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםhe made you hearהִשְׁמִיעֲךָhis voiceאֶת קֹלוֹto discipline you;לְיַסְּרֶךָּand onוְעַלthe earthהָאָרֶץhe made you seeהֶרְאֲךָhis greatהַגְּדוֹלָהfire,אֶת אִשּׁוֹand you heardשָׁמַעְתָּhis wordsוּדְבָרָיוfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the fire.הָאֵשׁ
And becauseוְתַחַת כִּיhe lovedאָהַבyour fathersאֶת אֲבֹתֶיךָand choseוַיִּבְחַרhis offspringבְּזַרְעוֹafter him,אַחֲרָיוhe brought you outוַיּוֹצִאֲךָwith his presence,בְּפָנָיוby his greatבְּ וֹ הַגָּדֹלpower,כֹחfrom Egypt,מִמִּצְרָיִם
to dispossessלְהוֹרִישׁnationsגּוֹיִםgreaterגְּדֹלִיםand mightierוַעֲצֻמִיםthan youמִמְּךָfrom before you,מִפָּנֶיךָto bring you in,לַהֲבִיאֲךָto giveלָתֶתyouלְךָtheir landאֶת אַרְצָםas an inheritance,נַחֲלָהas it is thisכַּ הַזֶּהday.יּוֹם
Knowוְיָדַעְתָּtoday,הַיּוֹםand bring it backוַהֲשֵׁבֹתָto your heart,אֶל לְבָבֶךָthat YHWH,כִּי יְהוָהheהוּאis Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםin the heavensבַּשָּׁמַיִםaboveמִמַּעַלand onוְעַלthe earthהָאָרֶץbelow;מִתָּחַתthere is noאֵיןother.עוֹד
Keepוְשָׁמַרְתָּhis statutesאֶת חֻקָּיוand his commandmentsוְאֶת מִצְוֺתָיוthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam commanding youמְצַוְּךָtoday,הַיּוֹםso thatאֲשֶׁרit may go wellיִיטַבwith youלְךָand with your childrenוּלְבָנֶיךָafter you,אַחֲרֶיךָand so thatוּלְמַעַןyou may prolongתַּאֲרִיךְyour daysיָמִיםonעַלthe landהַאֲדָמָהthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָis givingנֹתֵןyouלְךָallכָּלthe days.הַיָּמִים
ThenאָזMosesמֹשֶׁהset apartיַבְדִּילthreeשָׁלֹשׁcitiesעָרִיםbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןtoward the sunrise,מִזְרְחָה שָׁמֶשׁ
for the manslayerרוֹצֵחַto fleeלָנֻסthere,שָׁמָּהwhoאֲשֶׁרkillsיִרְצַחhis neighborאֶת רֵעֵהוּunknowingly,בִּבְלִי דַעַתand heוְהוּאdid notלֹאhateשֹׂנֵאhimלוֹpreviously,מִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹםso that by fleeingוְנָסtoאֶלoneאַחַתofמִןtheseהָאֵלcitiesהֶעָרִיםhe may live:וָחָי
Bezerאֶת בֶּצֶרin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרin the landבְּאֶרֶץof the plateau,הַמִּישֹׁרfor the Reubenites;לָרֻאוּבֵנִיRamothוְאֶת רָאמֹתin Gileadבַּגִּלְעָדfor the Gadites;לַגָּדִיand Golanוְאֶת גּוֹלָןin Bashanבַּבָּשָׁןfor the Manassites.לַמְנַשִּׁי
Thisוְזֹאתis the instructionהַתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהsetשָׂםbeforeלִפְנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
Theseאֵלֶּהare the testimonies,הָעֵדֹתthe statutes,וְהַחֻקִּיםand the rulesוְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםthatאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהspokeדִּבֶּרtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhen they came outבְּצֵאתָםof Egypt,מִמִּצְרָיִם
beyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןin the valleyבַּגַּיְאoppositeמוּלBeth-peor,בֵּית פְּעוֹרin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Sihonסִיחֹןkingמֶלֶךְof the Amorites,הָאֱמֹרִיwho livedאֲשֶׁר יוֹשֵׁבin Heshbon,בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹןwhomאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלstruckהִכָּהwhen they came outבְּצֵאתָםof Egypt.מִמִּצְרָיִם
They took possession ofוַיִּירְשׁוּhis landאֶת אַרְצוֹand the landוְאֶת אֶרֶץof Ogעוֹגkingמֶלֶךְof Bashan,הַבָּשָׁןthe twoשְׁנֵיkingsמַלְכֵיof the Amoritesהָאֱמֹרִיwho wereאֲשֶׁרbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןtoward the sunrise:מִזְרַח שָׁמֶשׁ
from Aroer,מֵעֲרֹעֵרwhichאֲשֶׁרis onעַלthe edgeשְׂפַתof the WadiנַחַלArnon,אַרְנֹןas far asוְעַדMountהַרSiyon,שִׂיאֹןthat is,הוּאHermon,חֶרְמוֹן
and allוְכָלthe Arabahהָעֲרָבָהbeyondעֵבֶרthe Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןeastward,מִזְרָחָהas far asוְעַדthe Seaיָםof the Arabah,הָעֲרָבָהunderתַּחַתthe slopesאַשְׁדֹּתof Pisgah.הַפִּסְגָּה
