Hebrews
New Testament · translated from the Greek
Jesus is greater than the angels, than Moses and than the priesthood of Aaron: he is the high priest and the sacrifice of the new covenant. So the letter calls its readers not to shrink back but to run with faith, looking to him.
How it is laid out
Key verses
- Hebrews 12:2 — Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of faith
- Hebrews 11:1 — Faith is the assurance of things hoped for
- Hebrews 4:16 — Let us draw near with boldness to the throne of grace
- Hebrews 4:12 — The word of God is living and active
Who wrote it
The letter does not say who wrote it. Origen, quoted by Eusebius (Church History 6.25.11-14), said that only God knows; some attributed it to Paul, others to Luke or to Clement of Rome.
When it was written
Debated; probably before AD 70, since it speaks of the priests' worship in the present tense (10:1-3).
For whom, and in what situation
Believers who knew Israel's worship well and who, after enduring sufferings, were in danger of shrinking back (10:32-39). It sends greetings from "those from Italy" (13:24).
