In its context

14with whom together we made sweet intimate counsel; in the house of Elohim we walked with the throng.

15Let death come by surprise upon them; let them go down to Sheol alive, for evils are where they reside, within them.

…

18He has ransomed in peace my soul from the battle against me, for many were against me.

19El will hear and humble them —he who sits from of old; Selah. those who have no changes and do not fear Elohim.

Its words in the original

  • אֱלֹהִיםelohim· Elohim, God, gods

The Hebrew word usually translated "God". This translation keeps "Elohim" when it speaks of the one true God, the Creator, the God of Israel. The word ends like a plural, but it does not mean several: for him the verb is singular ("Elohim created"); the plural form expresses greatness. The same word as a common noun names the "gods" of other peoples, and there it is a true plural, translated "gods". It is also used of mighty ones or judges.

  • אֶקְרָאekra· call, proclaim

Call: speak out to someone, summon, invite, give a name, proclaim; also read aloud. "Call on the name of YHWH" is to pray to him and worship him.

  • יהוָהyhva· YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

  • יוֹשִׁיעֵyoshie· save

Save: deliver someone from danger or from an oppressor. From this root come the names Joshua and Jesus.

  • עֶרֶבerev· evening

Evening, when the sun goes down. Each day of Genesis 1 is counted "evening and morning"; so in Israel the day begins at sunset.

  • בֹקֶרvoker· morning

    Morning, dawn.

  • צָהֳרַיִםtsahorayim· window, noon

An opening for light, such as the one in the ark (its exact form is not known). In the dual, the same word means "noon".

  • אָשִׂיחָהasicha· talk, meditate

Speak of something, meditate, turn a matter over aloud or within oneself.

  • אֶהֱמֶהeheme· roar, be in uproar

Make a great noise: roar, rage, be in turmoil. Said of the sea, of a crowd or of a stirred-up city; also of the heart that is moved.

  • יִּשְׁמַעyishma· hear, listen, obey

Hear, listen. In the Bible listening truly includes paying heed; so it often means "obey". In the causative form, make heard, proclaim.

  • קוֹלִkoli· voice, sound

Voice or sound: what is heard, from a person, an animal or a thing (thunder, steps).
