Translation note
David said that he was raiding the Negev of Judah, of the Jerahmeelites and of the Kenites, while v. 8 says that he raided the Geshurites, the Gizrites and the Amalekites. In the Hebrew, Achish’s question begins with a word that normally means “not”; it is understood as “against whom?” or “where?”
The context
9David would strike the land and leave alive neither man nor woman, and he would take sheep and goats and cattle and donkeys and camels and clothing, and come back and come to Achish.
