Historical and cultural background

Abram moves on by stages “toward the Negev” (Genesis 12:9), and Moses sends the explorers “into the Negev” and then into the hill country (Numbers 13:17). Psalm 126:4 speaks of “the streambeds in the Negev”.

How we translate it

“South” 62 times, “Negev” 43, “southward” 4, “southern” 2. “Negev” when it is the region, and “south” when it is the direction or a side (Exodus 26:18). This edition sets the list of regions in Joshua: “the hill country, the Negev, the Shephelah, and the slopes” (Joshua 10:40), and in Ezekiel 20:46 it keeps three words apart: תֵּימָן “the south”, דָּרוֹם “the southland” and נֶגֶב “the Negev”.
