of YHWHיְהוָהyehva

YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

2 Chronicles 34:8-28

8In the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had cleansed the land and the house, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the official of the city, and Joah son of Jehoahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of YHWH his Elohim. 9They came to Hilkiah the high priest and gave the silver that was brought into the house of Elohim, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered from the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They gave it into the hand of those doing the work, those appointed over the house of YHWH; and they gave it to those doing the work who were working in the house of YHWH, to restore and repair the house. 11They gave it to the craftsmen and to the builders, to buy quarried stones and timber for the clamps, and to provide beams for the houses that the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12The men were working with faithfulness in the work. Over them were appointed Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to direct; and the Levites, all who understood instruments of song, 13were over the carriers and were directing all who did work in every service; and of the Levites there were scribes, supervisors, and gatekeepers. 14When they were bringing out the silver that had been brought into the house of YHWH, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of YHWH given through Moses. 15Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, “The book of the law I have found in the house of YHWH.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan. 16Shaphan brought the book to the king, and he further brought back to the king word, saying, “All that was given into the hand of your servants, they are doing. 17They have emptied out the silver that was found in the house of YHWH, and have given it into the hand of those appointed and into the hand of those doing the work.” 18Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read in it before the king. 19And it happened, when the king heard the words of the law, that he tore his clothes. 20The king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying, 21“Go, consult YHWH for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, about the words of the book that has been found; for great is the fury of YHWH that has been poured out on us, because our fathers did not keep the word of YHWH, to do according to all that is written in this book.” 22So Hilkiah and those of the king went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath son of Hasrah, keeper of the garments; and she was living in Jerusalem in the second quarter; and they spoke to her to this effect. 23She said to them, “Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me: 24Thus says YHWH: Look, I am bringing evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the imprecations that are written in the book that they have read before the king of Judah; 25because they have abandoned me and have burned incense to other gods, so as to provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; and my fury will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’ 26And to the king of Judah, who sends you to consult YHWH, thus you shall say to him: ‘Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of Israel: As for the words that you have heard, 27because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before Elohim when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants, and you humbled yourself before me, and tore your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard, declares YHWH. 28Look, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your tombs in peace, and your eyes will not see all the evil that I am bringing upon this place and upon its inhabitants.’” And they brought back to the king word.

2 Kings 22:3-20

3And it happened, in year eighteen of King Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan son of Azaliah son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of YHWH, saying, 4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, and let him count the silver that has been brought into the house of YHWH, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered from the people; 5and let them give it into the hand of those who do the work, who are appointed over the house of YHWH; and let them give it to those who do the work that is in the house of YHWH, to repair the breaches of the house: 6to the carpenters, the builders, and the masons, and to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the house. 7But no account shall be asked of them for the silver that is given into their hand, for they act with faithfulness.” 8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “The book of the law I have found in the house of YHWH.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought back word to the king and said, “Your servants have emptied out the silver that was found in the house, and they have given it into the hand of those who do the work, who are appointed over the house of YHWH.” 10Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it before the king. 11And it happened, when the king heard the words of the book of the law, that he tore his clothes. 12The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying, 13“Go, consult YHWH for me and for the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the fury of YHWH that is kindled against us, because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.” 14Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah son of Harhas, keeper of the garments —she was living in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter— and they spoke with her. 15She said to them, “Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of Israel: ‘Say to the man who sent you to me: 16Thus says YHWH: Look, I am bringing evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read, 17because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods, so as to provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands; so my fury will be kindled against this place and will not be quenched. 18But to the king of Judah, who sent you to consult YHWH, thus you shall say to him: Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of Israel: As for the words that you have heard, 19because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before YHWH when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard, declares YHWH. 20Therefore, look, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your tombs in peace, and your eyes will not see all the evil that I am bringing upon this place.’” And they brought back word to the king.
