YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

Translation note

“Jealous” (qanna) is said here of YHWH in the context of the prohibition of bowing down to images and serving them (20:4-5); the same in 34:14. Compare Deuteronomy 24:16 and Ezekiel 18:20.

The context

4You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the waters under the earth.
