The wedding banquet and the great dinner

Matthew 22:1-14

It is discussed whether these are the same parable told on two occasions.

Luke 14:15-24

15And when one of those reclining at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Happy is whoever will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16But he said to him, “A certain man was giving a great dinner, and he invited many. 17And he sent his slave at the hour of the dinner to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18And they all began alike to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I have need to go out and see it; I ask you, have me excused.’ 19And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; I ask you, have me excused.’ 20And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21And the slave came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, angry, said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22And the slave said, ‘Master, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’ 23And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out to the roads and hedges, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled.’ 24For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.”

Matthew 22:1-14

1And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2“The kingdom of heaven has become like a man, a king, who made a wedding feast for his son. 3And he sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were not willing to come. 4Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Look, I have prepared my dinner, my bulls and the fattened animals have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast.”’ 5But they paid no attention and went off, one to his own field, another to his business; 6and the rest, seizing his slaves, treated them shamefully and killed them. 7The king was angered, and sending his troops, he destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8Then he says to his slaves, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9So go to the places where the roads go out of the city, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding feast.’ 10And those slaves went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was filled with guests. 11But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man not wearing a wedding garment. 12And he says to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind his feet and hands and throw him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14For many are called, but few chosen.”
