1 Peter 2:21–24

Peter presents the Messiah’s suffering as an example: he bore our sins in his body

21For to this you were called, because the Messiah also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps,

22who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth;

23who, when he was insulted, did not insult in return; when he suffered, did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly;

24who himself bore our sins in his body on the wooden beam, so that having died to sins we might live to righteousness; by whose wound you were healed.

In its context

19For this is grace, if because of conscience toward God someone endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.

20For what credit is there if, when you sin and are beaten, you endure it? But if when you do good and suffer you endure it, this is grace before God.

…

25For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
