Psalms 107:1–9
The redeemed tell how God brought them out of the desert and satisfied their hunger
Study it word by word1Give thanks to YHWH, for he is good, for his loyal love is forever.
2Let the redeemed of YHWH say so, whom he redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
3and gathered them from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the sea.
4They wandered in the wilderness, in the desert; a way to a city to dwell in they did not find.
5Hungry and also thirsty, their soul within them grew faint.
6And they cried out to YHWH in their distress; from their straits he delivered them.
7And he led them by a straight way to go to a city to dwell in.
8Let them give thanks to YHWH for his loyal love, and for his wonders toward human beings.
9For he has satisfied the longing soul, and the hungry soul he has filled with good.

Its words in the original
- הֹדוּhodu· praise, give thanks; confess
In one form of the verb, praise, give thanks. In another, confess: acknowledge sins or the name of God aloud. Its root sense is to throw.
- יהוָהyhva· YHWH
The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.
