Psalms 121:1–8
A pilgrim song: the one who keeps you does not slumber
Study it word by word1A song for the ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where will come my help?
2My help comes from YHWH, who made heaven and earth.
3May he not let your foot be moved; may he not slumber, the one who keeps you.
4Look, he will not slumber and will not sleep, the one who keeps Israel.
5YHWH is the one who keeps you; YHWH is your shade at your right hand.
6By day the sun will not strike you, nor the moon by night.
7YHWH will keep you from all evil; he will keep your soul.
8YHWH will keep your going out and your coming in from now and forever.

- מַּעֲלוֹתmaalot· step; ascent
Step, stair; going up.
- אֶשָּׂאesa· lift, carry, bear
Lift up, carry, bear. "Bear sin" is to suffer its consequences; said of God, "taking away" sin is forgiving it. "Lift up the eyes" is to look.

- עֶזְרִezri· helper, help
Help, aid; one who helps. It does not imply inferiority: the same word is often used for God as the helper of his people (Psalm 33:20; 121:1-2).
- יְהוָהyehva· YHWH
The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.
