Word study

Step, ascent: each step of a stairway and, more broadly, the act of going up. It comes from the verb עָלָה, ‘go up’ (H5927).

Historical and cultural background

Psalms 120 to 134 bear the title “A song of the ascents”; a note in this edition says that the Hebrew does not explain what the ascents are, and that it may refer to the going up of the pilgrims to Jerusalem for the feasts.

How we translate it

“Steps” 26 times and “ascents” 15, almost all in the title of Psalms 120 to 134. Other contexts ask for another form: “the going up from Babylon” (Ezra 7:9), YHWH’s “upper chambers” in the heavens (Amos 9:6), and “a man of high degree” (1 Chronicles 17:17).
