Width, breadth: the measure from side to side. It comes from the verb רָחַב, “to be wide”. BDB: breadth, literally or figuratively.

Historical and cultural background

The measurements are given in cubits: Noah's ark had “its width fifty cubits” (Genesis 6:15), and the ark of the covenant “a cubit and a half its width” (Exodus 25:10). Ezekiel 40–48 is full of this word, in the vision of the temple measured with a reed.

How we translate it

“Width” 81 times, “wide” 17, “breadth” 3. In measurements it is “its width”, beside “its length” and “its height”, as in the Hebrew (Genesis 6:15). In 1 Kings 4:29 the Hebrew phrase “breadth of heart” is kept.
