And the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםfoughtנִלְחֲמוּagainst Israel,בְיִשְׂרָאֵלand the menוַ אִישׁof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfledיָּנָסfrom beforeמִפְּנֵיthe Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםand fellוַיִּפְּלוּslainחֲלָלִיםon MountבְּהַרGilboa.גִּלְבֹּעַ
And the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםkept closeוַיַּדְבְּקוּafter Saulאַחֲרֵי שָׁאוּלand afterוְאַחֲרֵיhis sons,בָנָיוand the PhilistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםstruckוַיַּכּוּJonathan,אֶת יוֹנָתָןAbinadab,וְאֶת אֲבִינָדָבand Malchishua,וְאֶת מַלְכִּי שׁוּעַthe sonsבְּנֵיof Saul.שָׁאוּל
And the battleהַמִּלְחָמָהpressed hardוַתִּכְבַּדagainstעַלSaul,שָׁאוּלand the archers,הַמּוֹרִיםmen with the bow,בַּקָּשֶׁתfound him,וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּand he trembledוַיָּחֶלbecause ofמִןthe archers.הַיּוֹרִים
And Saulוַ שָׁאוּלsaidיֹּאמֶרto the one who carriedאֶל נֹשֵׂאhis weapons,כֵלָיו“Drawשְׁלֹףyour swordחַרְבְּךָand run me throughוְדָקְרֵנִיwith it,בָהּlestפֶּןtheseהָאֵלֶּהuncircumcisedהָעֲרֵלִיםcomeיָבֹאוּand abuseוְהִתְעַלְּלוּme.”בִיBut the one who carriedוְ נֹשֵׂאhis weaponsכֵלָיוwas notלֹאwilling,אָבָהforכִּיhe was veryמְאֹדafraid.יָרֵאSo Saulוַ שָׁאוּלtookיִּקַּחthe swordאֶת הַחֶרֶבand fellוַיִּפֹּלon it.עָלֶיהָ
And when the one who carriedוַ נֹשֵׂאhis weaponsכֵלָיוsawיַּרְאthatכִּיSaulשָׁאוּלwas dead,מֵתheהוּאalsoגַּםfellוַיִּפֹּלonעַלthe swordהַחֶרֶבand died.וַיָּמֹת
So Saulוַ שָׁאוּלdied,יָּמָתand his threeוּשְׁלֹשֶׁתsons;בָּנָיוand allוְכָלhis houseבֵּיתוֹdiedמֵתוּtogether.יַחְדָּו
And allוַ כָּלthe menאִישׁof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרwerein the valleyבָּעֵמֶקsawיִּרְאוּthatכִּיthey had fledנָסוּand thatוְכִיSaulשָׁאוּלand his sonsוּבָנָיוwere dead,מֵתוּand they abandonedוַיַּעַזְבוּtheir citiesעָרֵיהֶםand fled;וַיָּנֻסוּand the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםcameוַיָּבֹאוּand livedוַיֵּשְׁבוּin them.בָּהֶם
And the next day,וַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָתwhen the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםcameוַיָּבֹאוּto stripלְפַשֵּׁטthe slain,אֶת הַחֲלָלִיםthey foundוַיִּמְצְאוּSaulאֶת שָׁאוּלand his sonsוְאֶת בָּנָיוfallenנֹפְלִיםon MountבְּהַרGilboa.גִּלְבֹּעַ
And they stripped himוַיַּפְשִׁיטֻהוּand took awayוַיִּשְׂאוּhis headאֶת רֹאשׁוֹand his weapons,וְאֶת כֵּלָיוand sentוַיְשַׁלְּחוּthroughout the landבְאֶרֶץof the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםall around,סָבִיבto carry the newsלְבַשֵּׂרto their idolsאֶת עֲצַבֵּיהֶםand toוְאֶתthe people.הָעָם
And they putוַיָּשִׂימוּhis weaponsאֶת כֵּלָיוin the houseבֵּיתof their gods,אֱלֹהֵיהֶםand his skullוְאֶת גֻּלְגָּלְתּוֹthey fastenedתָקְעוּin the houseבֵּיתof Dagon.דָּגוֹן
And allוַ כֹּלJabesh-gileadיָבֵישׁ גִּלְעָדheardיִּשְׁמְעוּallאֵת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרthe Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםhad doneעָשׂוּto Saul,לְשָׁאוּל
and allכָּלthe valiantחַיִלmenאִישׁaroseוַיָּקוּמוּand took awayוַיִּשְׂאוּthe corpseאֶת גּוּפַתof Saulשָׁאוּלandוְאֵתthe corpsesגּוּפֹתof his sons,בָּנָיוand brought themוַיְבִיאוּםto Jabesh;יָבֵישָׁהand they buriedוַיִּקְבְּרוּtheir bonesאֶת עַצְמוֹתֵיהֶםunderתַּחַתthe oakהָאֵלָהin Jabesh,בְּיָבֵשׁand fastedוַיָּצוּמוּsevenשִׁבְעַתdays.יָמִים
So Saulוַ שָׁאוּלdiedיָּמָתfor his unfaithfulnessבְּמַעֲלוֹthatאֲשֶׁרhe committedמָעַלagainst YHWH,בַּיהוָהbecause ofעַלthe wordדְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe did notלֹאkeep,שָׁמָרand alsoוְגַםfor askingלִשְׁאוֹלby calling up the dead,בָּאוֹבto consult,לִדְרוֹשׁ
and he did notוְלֹאconsultדָרַשׁYHWH;בַּיהוָהand he put him to deathוַיְמִיתֵהוּand turnedוַיַּסֵּבthe kingdomאֶת הַמְּלוּכָהover to Davidלְדָוִידthe sonבֶּןof Jesse.יִשָׁי
