And it happened,וַיְהִיwhenכְּthe kingdomמַלְכוּתof Rehoboamרְחַבְעָםwas establishedהָכִיןand he became strong,וּכְחֶזְקָתוֹthat he abandonedעָזַבthe instructionתּוֹרַתof YHWH,יְהוָהand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwith him.עִמּוֹ
And it happenedוַיְהִיin the fifthבַּ הַחֲמִישִׁיתyearשָּׁנָהof KingלַמֶּלֶךְRehoboamרְחַבְעָםthat Shishakשִׁישַׁקkingמֶלֶךְof Egyptמִצְרַיִםcame upעָלָהagainstעַלJerusalem—יְרוּשָׁלִָםbecauseכִּיthey had been unfaithfulמָעֲלוּto YHWH—בַּיהוָה
with a thousandבְּאֶלֶףtwo hundredוּמָאתַיִםchariotsרֶכֶבand sixtyוּבְשִׁשִּׁיםthousandאֶלֶףhorsemen;פָּרָשִׁיםand there was noוְאֵיןnumberמִסְפָּרto the peopleלָעָםwhoאֲשֶׁרcameבָּאוּwith himעִמּוֹfrom Egypt:מִמִּצְרַיִםLibyans,לוּבִיםSukkites,סֻכִּיִּיםand Cushites.וְכוּשִׁים
He capturedוַיִּלְכֹּדthe fortifiedהַמְּצֻרוֹתcitiesעָרֵיthat belongedאֲשֶׁרto Judahלִיהוּדָהand cameוַיָּבֹאas far asעַדJerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָם
Then Shemaiahוּשְׁמַעְיָהthe prophetהַנָּבִיאcameבָּאtoאֶלRehoboamרְחַבְעָםand the officialsוְשָׂרֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהwhoאֲשֶׁרhad gatheredנֶאֶסְפוּatאֶלJerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםbecause ofמִפְּנֵיShishak,שִׁישָׁקand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָה‘Youאַתֶּםhave abandonedעֲזַבְתֶּםme,אֹתִיso I tooוְאַף אֲנִיhave abandonedעָזַבְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםinto the handבְּיַדof Shishak.’”שִׁישָׁק
The officialsשָׂרֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand the kingוְהַמֶּלֶךְhumbled themselvesוַיִּכָּנְעוּand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“YHWHיְהוָהis righteous.”צַדִּיק
When YHWHוּבִ יְהוָהsawרְאוֹתthatכִּיthey had humbled themselves,נִכְנָעוּthe wordדְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameהָיָהtoאֶלShemaiah,שְׁמַעְיָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“They have humbled themselves;נִכְנְעוּI will notלֹאdestroy them,אַשְׁחִיתֵםand I will giveוְנָתַתִּיthemלָהֶםescapeלִפְלֵיטָהin a little while,כִּמְעַטand my furyוְ חֲמָתִיwill notלֹאbe poured outתִתַּךְon Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִַםby the handבְּיַדof Shishak.שִׁישָׁק
Butכִּיthey will beיִהְיוּhisלוֹservants,לַעֲבָדִיםand they will knowוְיֵדְעוּmy serviceעֲבוֹדָתִיand the serviceוַעֲבוֹדַתof the kingdomsמַמְלְכוֹתof the lands.”הָאֲרָצוֹת
Shishakשִׁישַׁקkingמֶלֶךְof Egyptמִצְרַיִםcame upוַיַּעַלagainstעַלJerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםand tookוַיִּקַּחthe treasuresאֹצְרוֹתof the houseבֵּיתof YHWHיְהוָהand the treasuresוְ אֹצְרוֹתof the houseבֵּיתof the king;הַמֶּלֶךְeverythingהַכֹּלhe took.לָקָחHe also tookוַיִּקַּחthe shieldsמָגִנֵּיof goldהַזָּהָבthatאֲשֶׁרSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהhad made.עָשָׂה
Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְRehoboamרְחַבְעָםmadeיַּעַשׂin their placeתַּחְתֵּיהֶםbronzeנְחֹשֶׁתshields,מָגִנֵּיand entrusted themוְהִפְקִידto the handעַל יַדof the commandersשָׂרֵיof the runnersהָרָצִיםwho guardedהַשֹּׁמְרִיםthe doorwayפֶּתַחof the king’sהַמֶּלֶךְhouse.בֵּית
And it happened,וַיְהִיas often asמִדֵּיthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְwentבוֹאinto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהthe runnersהָרָצִיםcameבָּאוּand carried them,וּנְשָׂאוּםand brought them backוֶהֱשִׁבוּםtoאֶלthe guardroomתָּאof the runners.הָרָצִים
When he humbled himself,וּבְהִכָּנְעוֹthe angerאַףof YHWHיְהוָהturnedשָׁבfrom him,מִמֶּנּוּso as notוְלֹאto destroy himלְהַשְׁחִיתcompletely;לְכָלָהand alsoוְגַםin Judahבִּיהוּדָהthere wereהָיָהgoodטוֹבִיםthings.דְּבָרִים
KingהַמֶּלֶךְRehoboamרְחַבְעָםstrengthened himselfוַיִּתְחַזֵּקin Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִַםand reigned.וַיִּמְלֹךְRehoboamרְחַבְעָםwas fortyבֶן אַרְבָּעִיםand oneוְאַחַתyears oldשָׁנָהwhen he began to reign,בְּמָלְכוֹand he reignedוּ מָלַךְseventeenשֲׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵהyearsשָׁנָהin Jerusalem,בִּירוּשָׁלִַםthe cityהָעִירthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהchoseבָּחַרout of allמִכֹּלthe tribesשִׁבְטֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלto putלָשׂוּםhis nameשְׁמוֹthere.שָׁםAnd his mother’sוְ אִמּוֹnameשֵׁםwas Naamahנַעֲמָהthe Ammonite.הָעַמֹּנִית
He didוַיַּעַשׂwhat was evil,הָרָעforכִּיhe did notלֹאsetהֵכִיןhis heartלִבּוֹto seekלִדְרוֹשׁYHWH.אֶת יְהוָה
The deedsוְדִבְרֵיof Rehoboam,רְחַבְעָםthe firstהָרִאשֹׁנִיםand the last,וְהָאֲחַרוֹנִיםare they notהֲלֹא הֵםwrittenכְּתוּבִיםin the wordsבְּדִבְרֵיof Shemaiahשְׁמַעְיָהthe prophetהַנָּבִיאand of Iddoוְעִדּוֹthe seer,הַחֹזֶהaccording to the genealogical record?לְהִתְיַחֵשׂAnd there were warsוּמִלְחֲמוֹתbetween Rehoboamרְחַבְעָםand Jeroboamוְיָרָבְעָםallכָּלthe days.הַיָּמִים
Rehoboamרְחַבְעָםlay downוַיִּשְׁכַּבwithעִםhis fathersאֲבֹתָיוand was buriedוַיִּקָּבֵרin the cityבְּעִירof David;דָּוִידand Abijahוַ אֲבִיָּהhis sonבְנוֹreignedיִּמְלֹךְin his place.תַּחְתָּיו
